Ancaster entry smashes record at national championships
The Change CRAFTER Services Mazda RX8 outperformed the competition at last weekend’s ASN Canada FIA Time-Attack (solo I) National Championships, setting new lap records with its Ancaster-based entry.
Driven by Scott Murfin and headed up by owner Gary Wood, the team broke the GT1 lap record on the Mosport road course with a 1:36.868 posting, and then bettered that record with a 1:35.168, taking the Canadian GT1 Time Attack Championship.
Although Wood usually drives the Mazda in these events, he asked Murfin, a competition instructor, to get behind the wheel for this occasion.
“The car is my regular ride in the Ontario Time-Attack series and, for this event, I asked Scott to drive it to see its true potential,” Wood said. “The competition was close against a Nissan 350Z, a Camaro Z28, a Subaru Sti and others, until that one super lap.”
The event was one of several held at various road courses across the province during the season. The win was the second national title for Wood.
“This is the second Canadian National Championship for the car, which earlier won the 2005 Autoslalom (solo II) title in B Stock trim,” he noted. “Since then we have done annual performance upgrades including adding many Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development racing parts, having the two-rotor engine rebuilt by Mazdees of Pickering and adding a Petitt Stage 2 Supercharger. Along with these important suppliers, I want to also thank Saint Catharines Mazda for its support.”

Hey thats cool,!
Just curious which course did you run? Eric Meyer earlier this year qualified at Mosport with a 1:33.437 in his RX8, which is of course a Pro Race car on slicks, but he is still N/A. Were you running DOT's or slicks? Full interior or is this a caged and proper race car? Just curious because I have never really understood time attack or what a fast time attack car is, and am always exploring possible new venues.
