Shinka dyno results...
June 17th, 2006...
I put my bone stock Shinka on the dynoJet today, at www.dynolab.net's place here in Marietta. I am posting the results below... very excited to pull near 190rwhp off a bone-stock!
Here's the slip, just for posterity in case anyone cares... Open for discussion on how to make it faster, without selling my house, or making it non-driveable to work every day!

Actually no, they're not "fat & heavy"... in fact I would argue there is no weight difference unless you've managed to strip out your seats and all that interior stuff. The differences are in the suspension, yes - but no engine differences.

Yeah, that's what I was going to say... Can you explain why you got only 190hp out of the car? Shinka or not, the car's supposed to have 232hp. I can understand a little difference, but no extra speaker or leather seat's gonna make that much of a difference.

Seriously? You guys wonder? Mazda clearly "over-estimated" their horsepower rating... almost as badly as their projected gas mileage! I've been hanging out with the local RX8 group in GA, and we were rather excited to see the car dyno (forget that it's a Shinka for a minute...as obviously that has no influence on dyno numbers) 187hp. Some of the guys down here have had as little at 170-180hp stock on a standard RX-8 vehicle, '04-'05 so I'd say I was pretty excited to be in the upper strata of that group, bone-stock.
Our local mechanic (Charlie from Mazcare) tends to be the high performer and he was pushing 205hp, with a what I can only guess was a significantly more modded car than my stock ride - maybe some of the guys down here can chime in?
Anyway - you guys seem to be talking pretty tough, let's see some dyno numbers on your 8's... stock or otherwise, let's see what you're pulling? It's easy to talk big... isn't it?
I'd love to see a plain, stock RX-8 pull anything over 200hp.. in fact, I think I would be dang near amazed to see that - who's got something on paper?

the car has 232hp at the crank, so if you know about car, at the wheel its going to be less. 190hp at the wheel is not bad. that is about 18% less then at the crank. my last car rxs type-s 200hp at the crank. but at the wheel it was 163hp and that was 18.5% less then the crank. 15% to 20% less power at the wheel is about right. specialy for a rear wheel drive car, that the power has to travel from the front of the car to the rear of the car.

Ya^^ i was going to say.. there is always a percent differance, for autos its something closer to 30%, only becuase you trade power for rpms.. or vice versa, anyways, 190whp sounds about right, upgrade the spark plugs, and wires, should help
and i think when everyone says there is little HP gain from CAI's and Exhaust.. i dont believe, so throw on a good sounding exhaust and a possible CAI and see if its not Dynoed above 200

Actually... I dyno'd 187.2HP, and my window sticker says 238HP... That's over 20% loss... and actually quite sad if you're just looking to chalk it up to 'power loss' due to the transfer of the low-torque engine... You have to take into account the insane number of 'PMC flash' revisions that Mazda has gone through, which messed with the air/fuel mixture so much, it absolutely HAD to factor into horsepower output... still, it's interesting to see 187hp off the car @ the wheels.
Anyway - thanks for the intelligent replies (at least most of them).

Good on ya for dynoing, except that dyno is worthless above about 120mph - Have him turn on 'smoothing' so we can actually READ the curve.
Often shops run the smoothing factors very low in hopes of hitting a high 'peak' number in one of the squiggles.
Also, get a graph 'un-corrected' or 'measured'. You don't need SAE or Corrected HP unless you car what your car would MAYBE pull in PERFECT or standardized conditions. Personally, I care MUCH more about what my car puts down in my town, on the day I happened to pull.
