Buffing Scratches?

Could someone please explain to me how buffing out scratches works...I mean I realize what buffing is. But if you buff a scratch out, doesn't it remove the clearcoat finish? I have a scratch about 1.5 inches, not very deep on my driver side door that I am considering having buffed out. Or should I try buffing it myself? I've never done it before. Wish I had a digital camera so I could show you guys the scratch. It isn't deep at all, you can barely feel it when running your finger across it.

3M has some great polishing fluids that can buff out light scratches with a soft cloth. I would not use an orbital buffer unless you are experienced with them and for one scratch it probably is not necessary. I'll post again with exatcly which 3M polish I have used on my Miata and S2000 since I can't remember off the top of my head.

Thanks, I'll check back tonight. Gotta go pick up my 8 from the dealership =) I've been without her for two and half days now.
