Go to a local janitor/cleaning supplier, the kind that sell to schools, and hospitals.
They will sell a gum remover product that works real well. Name brand doesnt matter, they are all an aerosol that freezes the gum so you can scrape it off.
I worked as a custodian for years, and have cleaned many wads of gum off of carpets and entrance mats.
Don't bother with ice, Pb, or any other folklore, get what the pro's use.

As an example. You might even check out your local Home depot, they may carry what you need.
Or, pop into your local school, and ask a custodian how to remove gum from your mats. He may even come out and do it for you.
(More likely to happen if your wife asks and not you, assuming the custodian is male)
