Just clayed and off to detailer
Just clayed my car after owning it for almost 2 years now. I put a coat of wax when I got it but nothing since than 
For the hour and half I spent claying it was a huge improvement. Car is looking great, minus the swirl marks, scratches and paint chips on the front clip.
Masked off the cars black trim and waiting for a coworker to get off work so I can leave it for him over night. Hopefully it wont rain tomorrow so I can get some new pictures. More importantly I hope we can get the gray to POP. Not sure how well a good detailing will do but we shall see.
Pictures will come tomorrow or the following day.
This will be the best $50 bucks I spend

I picked it up but it was cloudy and starting to rain a bit so pictures wouldnt do much judgement. I did let the kid drive it around the block for a bit and he loved the 'triangles'. The car felt so super smooth it was sex.
Cant wait for it to get sunny. Oh wait seattle never gets sunny Looks like Thursday or Friday is the only nondrizzlepissingrain day of the week. Ill take pictures anyways it doesnt matter. This is a good time to pull the wheels off the car and clean inside, yet they will get dirty from my intense driving in a day.

Well after I washed it I some how aquired 3 scratched on the bumper? Oh well ill take care of those soon. Though I should prob look into finding someone with a clean bumper cause mine is peppered with rock chips.
Being a Galaxy Gray it didnt really POP like a Black or Red car would. But in person I can see it sparkle. Pictures dont do a good job cause my camera was flashing low battery at me. Here are two.

Claying gets rid of any tar and other unseen debris after washing. To get rid of swirls you have to hand (or better orbital) polish. Polishing will also get rid of water spots (or use white vinegar). Then wax and hand buff.
Heck, claying is the most tedious part - finish the detailing yourself.

Always a good idea to read the first post I just didnt want to drop the $$$ in compounds so I had a kid I work with do it for $50.

I did read you initial post and didn't note any insight on not wanting to spend money on compounds. Heck, all you need is a mild polish.
The other part of my response was to another member's post alluding to clay removing swirls - it does not; that's what polish is for. Claying is still an essential part of the 4-step process tho':
1. Wash with Dawn detergent (to clean and remove old wax).
2. Clay bar to remove unseen contaminants.
3. Polish with a mild abrasive to remove swirls.
4. Wax with a high quality Carnauba or a synthetic (like Meguair's Nxt Tech II or Zaino)

I had a black Miata for a long time and I didn't see any reduction in swirls until I bought one. My GOD--black can look so sexy and classy when it's flawless!

A properly polished/waxed black car is unparalleled, but unfortunately the reciprocal is true as well. This will be my last dark colored vehicle. Silver from now on!

Polishing by hand is a virtually impossible task. You definitely need a mid-range Porter Cable dual action polisher or equivalent.
