Chas--did you clean it from the last time? It was kind of messed up. Last time I saw it Boo was trying to lick it clean--di he get all of it?
Just installed my afe short shifter--may help with that unintentional 3nd to 2nd shift! feels good--feels like a serious shifter--sort of like the old hurst shifters except much shorter. Does carry a good bit of tranny noise into the car , but of course I have to tinker with it. Maybe I ought to change my name to "Tinkerman".
Silver---i ended up ordering a sa2005 G force open face helmet--from Discovery Parts in Fayettville. Didnt have to pay shipping and they threw in a free helmet bag! I ended up deciding on the open face design because it is cooler and l remembered my glasses plus such a big head--caused me problems with the full face one's. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Talking

I've been dying to tell you guys this but I had to wait till I talked with the wife first. I will be sporting a new (to me) track car sometime soon. I hope to be driving it on the track by Roebling or CMP NASA events. I'm getting an early 90's Miata and depending on how things work out I may trailer it in. Not sure yet as I just want to get it and make it safe with roll bars and race seats being one of the first things on the list of to-do's. I've made the decision to not drive my 8 on track after getting into HPDE3 or beyond. As tracking gets closer to the edge, the opportunity for damage compounds exponentially. I discussed it with my wife yesterday and I believe I can do this relatively cheep. Compared to what I've invested already into my 8. I will not have to worry about insurance and with as little as I will have into it if something happens... I just fix it or do something else.

With my 8, I'm starting to be concerned for it's safety and I will always hold back more because of the fear of damage. My friend Larry (WhiteTop) wants to help me build it and actually said he would buy it and let me drive it but I want to own it myself. We may spread some of the cost out together though. I think this is a wise move and some of you may want to consider doing the same thing. Lego's 7 was the last straw. I'm going with the Miata because Charlie convincingly swayed me to it because of cost and readily available parts. When Charlie talks, I listen.

Wonderful news Don. I'm very happy for you and can't wait to see it. The wonderful thing about having a car like the Miata or RX-7 is that there are several race series out there from which you can get aftermarket parts. The miata is very proven and with SM and ITA parts out there, it'll be very cheap and a blast to have. Having a dedicated track car takes a load off the back of your mind of wondering what's going to happen. I'm glad I did it and wish you the best. You're going to have a blast.

Make sure you name her and let your wife know. Kelly refers to the RX-7 and RX-8 as my mistresses since they take up my time and money! Plus it's kind of cool to be able to say, "Hey Honey, I'll going to go out and mess around with Jessica for a couple of hours..." and have her reply "Ok, no problem. Be careful and don't hurt yourself."

Thanks Lego. I'll definately make sure the wilfe in part of it. I will make sure she drives it some. My only concern is that she will like it so much she will not want me to start modifying it! Then I'll have to get another one.

we do grow dont we--I have been waiting for TA to do the same. Congrats Silver. It will not be the rotary but it is a Mazda! You know I have been thinking about an E-30 or a 944 myself. But I will probably continue to run the 8
Its funny but I actually felt less of a risk when i got to hp-3.
Watch out all for Silvers flying Miata!

Hence, the Evo is gone.....wait to you go to HPDE 4, with open passing. I'll never forget Steve's face goign three wide through 6 at Road Atlanta. Not a word was said, but his face, priceless. Good move guys, don't skimp on safety. Track time is the key to speed, not mods.

I have backed off a bit in HPDE4 compared to HPDE3. I have seen most HPDE incidents in HPDE4 typically from other instructors. So, with open passing, I am still wary and if I see a car comming up on me, I'll slow down and give a point by so it is perfectly clear what I am doing.

6 days and counting for me!!!!!~! Steve did the Panoz 1 day racing school yesterday on the new surface and said it is very smoooooth. Guess what else? No painted markers on track. I( can't wait to get out there on smooth clean black assssphalt and see how it feels. I think the car should be really great this time out with the changes we made recently.

Awesome!!!I can't wait either. I always used the painted marks approaching turn 3 and under the bridge in 11. Shouldn't be hard to pick out some landmarks instead. May be a bit harder wheen teaching someone else though...
I am really leaning towards doing the March 9th Instructor only day with the BMW boys. That promises to be a full day of open track.

Charlie, I'll try to come out next Saturday and watch a little. I just finished prepping my car for next Sunday so I will not have to do it in a rush next week. I'm ordering a set of coils as it appears mine are fried again. It's been around 20K miles now. Guess I'll go ahead and get a set of plugs while I'm at it.

Cleaned and charged my Revi and put my Hawk HP+'s on. God I love those pads. Had to stick my right eyeball back in the socket after taking it out for a spin and hitting the brakes like I was entering turn 10A. Dropped one of the screws that holds the collar onto the Revi box. Guess I'll never find that one so I be looking at the hardware store for a replacement.

The installation of my gauge pod has presented me with a rattling sound that I can't seem to find. I've checked my line to see if it is touching the transmission but it's not, so tying it down doesn't seem to be the answer. I put a sweatshirt over the gauge pod and the sound was gone so it is emanating from the pod. OD, any idea what to do about it? I've already put some dampening packing in the cavity. It's really annoying. Lego noticed it when he rode with me at CMP and the wife noticed it last night. I was going to ignore it but everyone that rides ask what that rattling sound is.

EDIT:
4 Coils shipped cost $110.24 from onlinemazdaparts.com.

Silver--funny you should ask--i was just working on mine as one little bolt had loosen.
Is your rattle only under acceleration or all the time? If all the time is it at idle with the car stopped?
A line rattle usually is like a rapid drumbeat--buzz type thing, a loose screw or bolt will make for the classic squeaking kind of thing. I had one where the oil line goes through the firewall and where another line was hitting some wires etc under the dash. Just have to search. Maybe the pod fitment?

How did you burn up your coil packs man? How did you know --symptoms? You may need to do the indiv coil ground to the neg battery post?

I may get to come up and watch at RA awhile.

Chars--what else have yall done to the ride?
How many days?

OD, the sound is under acceleration and it seems to slack off at around 6K RPM (I think), and some at idle. Once I get up to cruising and level out my speed it stops. Guess I'll take the pod off and check for loose fit. It just seems to be a character of the gauge pod. It's always done it. I just thought I'd get used to it but I haven't.

I noticed the coils when taking of the first one so I could get my Revi filter out for cleaning. Didn't bother with the others, as there was nothing I could do any way. I will just replace them all at one time. I didn't really notice anything. I did seem like my power was down but who knows, she was running OK. I guess I do need to look into the grounding.

Silver --i got your phone message last night at around 10pm---sorry i missed you.
Sure sounds like a line rattle to me somewhere/ It may be that tight clearance of the ss oil pressure line in the back of the gauge pod. You could try to just wrap it with electrical tape or small piece of foam and see if that takes care of it. Remember how tight of a fit that was? I would hate to think you would have to go back to the plastic line. But I bet the ss line is where the problem is. We can take a look Saturday if you coming up to RA.

I'm going to take the pod out today and wrap as you suggest and make sure nothing is loose. If it's still noisy then we will look it over Saturday. Thanks!

OD, I noticed when I took the console off the boot gasket was offset which could have been an issue. So I took the boot plate off and straightened it out. Also re-aligned the cables and padded the SS one. packed more sound dampening, tightened everything up and took her for a drive and I think I've fixed the vibration issue.
