Just North of the city

I'm just North of Birmingham. I have a 2004 RX-8 GT. Had it for about a year now. Love the car, even though I had several issues the first year, but knock on wood, I hope all of that is behind me. As you can see, I hope, mine is titanium gray.

First off Welcome aboard jeffsk8036! Sorry to hear that you have had problems with your 8. Knock on wood, I have not had any issues with mine.

You have a nice color there, partial to Titanium gray myself! but if you are like me stay away from crowded parking lots because no one respects other peoples property! Got a few dings in the side due to car doors being opened into it, even with me parking out in the lower fourty. You come back out and there are cars all around yours out in the middle of no where!

On another note you should also go check out the link under my sig when ya get a chance!

New Tires

Any of you that bought your cars in B'ham from Med Center or Trussville Mazda with the free tires and battery option got your free tires yet? Just did. They dropped Dunlop and went to Kuhmo Ecsta. We did it along with the 30,000 mile check-up ($$$!). There was still a lot of tread left on the OEM Bridgestones, but they were cupping so bad the noise was getting intolerable.

Just wondering if any of you have experience with the Kuhmos. And I miss being over there! 2.5 years till retirement.......

And (late) Happy New Year to all!

I bought my car at Med Center with the free tires and batteries, at 23,000 miles my Dunlops that came on the car were worn out and when they replaced them they went back with Dunlops, so I can't help ya on the Kuhmos question. I asked them when they come told me that it was time for my tire to be replaced, what kind of replacement tires were they going to put on it and he carried me out and showed me these Dunlops...Can't remember the exact Dunlope it is but it is not as sticky as the tire that came on it new. So far though the life of the tire seems to be lasting better than the tire that came on it.

How much was the 30k check-up? That is my next service!! I am dredding it!

Happy New Year back atcha!

Hmmm....I didn't get that offer when I bought mine but it doesn't matter really. I wouldn't have gone with the Kuhmo's anyway. They are cheap tires and you get what you pay for. I highly recommend going with BFG G-Force tires. Excellent grip in all weather and a good tread design.

The service is listed at $639.95. For some reason they discounted it 10% when wife picked the car up. It's a pretty comprehensive list of things they do, including transmission fluid, brake fluid, alignment, plugs, etc. The tires were listed as costing $580 if purchased outright. With a change in management, they no longer give courtesy cars. That sucked.

As to the Kuhmos being "cheap", yes, they cost less (on TireRack) than many others, but my other car group loves to autocross on them. But, we take what the dealer offers with the replacement deal. "AA" traction rating, "A" temperature, 320 treadwear. The 8 is just a daily driver, so any drop in performance won't be noticed.

I rode a set of the Ecsta SPTs till they wore out. I thought they gave a little less feel than the stock bridgestones, but were much better in the wet.

Hi!

Hey everyone. Checking in after a while...Happy Belated New Year! I just got my tires replaced at Med Center in Pelham and they put on new Dunlops. I've always been pleased with them, and they seemed to hold up pretty well.

Hey young'un! I was at MedCenter the day after Thanksgiving, and asked about the tires. Since we moved, I have to plan visits around being over there. The service guy said they were going to move away from Dunlop because of problems, and go to Kuhmo. Since my Toyota group likes them, I figured they couldn't be as bad as the OEM's that cupped real bad. Still got 30,000 miles out of them, but rough feeling and sounding. Got them installed right after Jan. 1. I haven't really tested them yet.

I still use the picture of your car reflecting in mine for my background on my work PC.

I just wanted to keep you all updated regarding dealerships in Bham area.

Trussville and Med Center are no longer related.. Trussville was bought out by Jeff Sikes in Huntsville and Trussville Mazda is the ONLY dealership to support MRCCAL.com and Deals Gap Rotary Rally. So, that being said, I would greatly appreciate if you support Trussville instead of Med Center.

Second, I been talking to the parts manager and service manager at Trussville and wondering if any of you 8 owners are interested in doing a "TECH DAY"!

I'm also wanting to do a quick seminar about learning more about your engine. I know a lot of you haven't seen the inside of the RENESIS and I happen to have one at home that I'm going to tear it apart.

I also have a 3 rotor that I could bring to show you at the TECH DAY.

So, post here if you are interested in this and lets pick a day where we could all come to Trussville Mazda and hang our for a day.. Once we pick a day, I'll pitch it to the GM and we'll go from there.

Also, those of you haven't signed up for DGRR 2008, please do so. I'll honor old registration fee for all the AL 8 owners/rotary owners til End of this month.

I would support Trussville but if I don't get my car serviced at Med Center I loose my free tires and batteries for life. I also am good friends with the head service writer. He has went way out of his way for me on more than one occassion. Have you talked to anyone at Med Center about supporting the site?

I would really like to hang at Trussville for a day though! For me it would all depend on when it was if I was off work or not. I work every other weekend.

I think Trussville is a great dealership. However, as some have already said, I bought my car at Med-Center. I have a close relationship with their service manager. He has went above and beyond the call of his duty when it's come to taking care of my car. We went to school together and we still live in the same small town north of the city. He's even offered to drive my car to work to avoid my taking time off work and making the 35 mile trek myself. BUT, a tech day at Trussville sounds exciting and cool. Keep me posted on that, PLEASE!

Hey Phil. I echo the same sentiments voiced above. Bought the car at Med Center, and rather like the "free" tires for life deal. (Although I realize its not really free. I pay for it each month when I send off that check!)

Well.... guys I have to say. I was rather embarrassed by an 8 owner yesterday. I dont know if the person was local or not.....I was at my veterinarian's office in Cahaba Heights yesterday (inside!) when I heard a car honking repeatedly. Then I heard someone yelling at the top of their lungs. It sounded awful, so me and a staff member at the vet's office went outside to see what the deal was. It was someone in a red RX8 with tinted windows, pissed off at some car that was sitting at the intersection and wouldnt move fast enough. So the 8 owner had his window down, honking and yelling. It was awful. I seriously wondered if he was going to whip out a pistol next. Shame on you. We all get road rage every now and then, but that was a little extreme. Anyway...I hope it wasnt a local owner, but have to assume it was. Not very nice.

Yes, but it is nice not to have to pay at the dealership when you get them so it makes you feel better...It did me anyways!

Yes I agree because this causes everyone who seen this that don't know any of us think that we are all that way!

Ron, I've been running Kuhmos for over a year. I don't drive ***** to the wall too often these days so my experience is with normal everyday. At $400 per set, the Kuhmos were less than half the price for the Michelin Pilot Sports (>$1k) and much less than the Bridgestones. I have no problem with them and will probably buy them again. In fact I bought some for my Cooper last summer. They seem to be lasting longer than the B'stones and at least as long as the Michs. They handle well and ride quietly.
