Does anyone near Raleigh, NC have a rotary compression tester they'd be willing to let me use? I would just buy one but they are out of stock and I can't find any on secondary markets. I bought an S1 last week and got it out of limp mode today. I want to make sure the compression is good before I start planning upgrades.

Back when I lived in Durham, the Mazda dealership off of 501 would do compression tests, and I never had any other issues with service. A little pricey, but that's to be expected.
Still, nothing beats having a tester of your own, not only to do it when you want with ease, but to make sure it's done properly. Congrats on getting your 8 though. Any plans for it?

Once I know it's solid I'm going to do all of the oil and cooling upgrades to make it ready for a turbocharger down the road. Then I'll address the body, it has dents, faded paint, cracked bumper cover... After that I'd like to get to 300whp that doesn't break something all the time.

Hope you've got a fat wallet for that! I'm currently saving up for a paint job myself. Had to re-do my roof and front bumper about 2 years ago and that was over $1000. Now my hood and trunk are starting to have the clear coat peeling as well... I wish I had just wrapped it and been done, but couldn't do it to a stormy blue. I like the color too much.

It's a long term project so I'll just save up for each step along the way. Just something fun and streetable, nothing too crazy. I also have the blue one. I've wanted a blue car my whole life. I got the car for $1900 with 82,000 miles. Interior is very clean aside from the standard cracked airbag and broken center console lid button. My neighbor works at a European performance shop so I'm hoping I can get a hook--up from the body shop they use when the time comes. He's already hooked me up with his interior guy to replace the headliner on my A4.
