Endurance Karting - Charlotte, NC - 11/12/05
A group of us are looking into attending a 6 hour endurance Karting race at Lowe's Motor Speedway in November. The details have not been worked out yet but this could be a lot of fun.

I think we may be looking at two groups. I'm SURE one will be over 40. I think we will have to wait and see who all wants to participate. Let's see what Charlie (Marietta 8) comes up with.

With 13 driver changes I guess you could have 6 people on a team and each run twice with one running 3 times.
I personally could run in either; GTS, GT40 or GTBB as I would be a first timer over 40 and hover around the 190 lbs range.
Have any of you done this before?

A Karting Adventure (Long)
Monday night happens to be League Racing night at VictoryLane Karting center (www.377fast.com)in Charlotte. Since I am in Charlotte for part of the week I decided to get some real racing action to prep for our Endurance Karting event in November!
Let me tell y'all that I had so much fun. VictoryLane is a 1/3 mile +/- indoor track. The carts are fast as crap since they remove the governors. You have to brake hard for turns. Little things make a difference such as sliding your seat forwards or backwards to shift weight on or off the rear wheels for balance. We are dealing in hundredths of a second advantages for some of the racers. Alas I am not so good that a hundredth would do much for me as my consistency isn't as high.
Anyway, registration was 630 - 7pm. From 7 - 745 it was open practice. They had 13 carts on track and people who paid to race lined up and took turns in the various carts. Usually you took a cart out for 5 or 6 laps to get a feel for them. After practice there was a drivers meeting. We got to vote out the slowest cart. We are also divided up into light weight and heavy weight groups. Cut off was about 190#. There were only 4 of us heavies so a couple of the lightweight guys who were out of the points battle in the league agreed to transfer into our group so there would be more folks to race against. We ended up with a field of 8. There were 2 lightweight groups each with 12 racers. We got a 10 minute session to set a fast lap. That lap determined starting position in the heat race. I am proud to say I wasn't last. I came in 6th out of 8. After qualifying we had the heat race. We get lined up on the grid in staggered order. When the light goes green it is a mad dash for turn one. It was a great race. I had a nice battle with the guy in front of me but couldn't get past him. I'd reel him in then make a mistake and spend 3 laps reeling him in again. I ended up in 4th since 2 guys had an incident that slowed them down a lot.
The main event was 15 minutes long. I grided up in 4th out of 8. As the light went green and I dove into turn one, I realized that I was gonna lose positions fast. I did. Before I knew it, 2 carts were past me. A couple laps later, a 3rd one passed me putting me in 7th. On the last lap of the race I was lapped by the first 2 racers. Doesn't sound so glamorous losing 3 positions but it was great fun and I was glad I didn't finish last. My cart was very twitchy for the first 6 laps with strong tendency to swing its *** end out in fast sweepers as well as on corner exit. By the time I figured out how to drive it properly it was too late.
VictoryLane also does some enduro races. I think it is every other Sunday they hold a 2 hour race. A team of 2 can enter that.
I met some guys who have done Endurance Carting and they all say it is awesome. Apparently they had it last week at Lowes and the course is newly resurfaced. They said that the course is fast and the racing is excellent. They recommended teams of 4 - 5 max. The people I raced against were fast. It is going to be tough to be competative but I know we'll have fun trying.

I'm sorry about this guys and gals, but I'm going to have to withdraw my name from the event. I might be going to Iraq for a year instead. We'll find out soon, been waiting for a month now, but the word is still "stand-by to stand-by".

Oh, and one more thing. You may not hear this enough, but THANK YOU. We apprecate what you do.
