Get taxed much?

Get taxed much?
Any of you North Carolinians get taxed for your 8 by your county/city? I just got some random bill in the mail from Durham county asking for $327 in "property tax."
Anybody know what happens if you just throw that notice in the trash? Sorry- I'm all for taxation and stuff.. but how many times are they going to tax me for the same thing? So far this is the 4th time since I've bought the car.

Is the car in your name or your folks name? If you're in the area for a long time with out-of-state plates you may get hassled to register the car in state. Happened to my friend in Nevada. He was unfortunate enough to have a state trooper living in the same apartment complex. However, if the car is registered to your folks back in PA they probably can't force you. Failing that, if you can put some evidence that:
1) you're a student and
2) your permanent home is in PA
into your glovebox you might be able to dodge the pushing to get local plates.
Proof that you are registered to vote back in PA would be pretty airtight.

Yep, this comes every year. It is property tax on having a vehicle and it must be paid like BigPineKey said or you will not be able to renew your plate. The nice thing is it can be deducted on your federal income taxes at the end of the year. If you are not a permanant resident I woundn't think you need to have your car registered to NC. Also, I do remember going to the DMV with a friend when they moved here from Ohio and to get NC tags they had to pay the property tax, sales tax on the car's worth, and a one time Highway usage tax. Crazy ****.

Well the title is in my name, but I'm sure I could put someone else on there if need be. I wonder what the best state to register it in would be? I have family in PA, MD, and FL. I'll have to ask them if they get taxed for their cars. I've just never heard of getting all these taxes. When I bought my last car in PA I paid sales tax and that's it.
Thanks for your advice Cool-Blue. It's a tricky line to walk, because I definitely want to maintain my resident status for education purposes, but don't want all the silly taxes that come with it. I may be asking too much, yes, but I don't believe in this much government interference.

It boggles my mind that state tax rates on the vehicles vary so much. In Oregon there was no sales tax and the vehicle registration was $40 for 2 years, even on a brand new car. Then we moved to Nevada with a 7% sales tax and registration for my buddies nearly new Pathfinder was ~$800 because they charged part of that fee based on the value of the vehicle. Here in NY it's again ~$40 to register for 2 years, no property tax on the car, but the sales tax can eat you alive.
Ironically, my wife and I researched the tax rates for many states before deciding on relocation each time, but we still ended up in NY which is nearly the worst total package (high income tax AND high sales tax AND high property tax AND poor home-schooling laws). I do wish I could have taken a job in NH 7 years ago (no sales tax and no state income tax). Folks in Florida and Texas do pretty well too, right?

yeah- i thought moving from Northern VA /DC 'burbs taxes would be cheaper in NC, but it's not- had to pay $800 to register the 8 and NSX. hopefully Chatham County doesn't have a property (vehicle) tax. Does anyone know? NoVA had high vehicle taxes.
FYI- You should look at Durham/Chapel Hill/Orange County real estate taxes- they're outta sight.

Yeah I live right on the border of chapel hill and durham (by the johnston lexus dealership on 751). I've heard from my friends that it's just ridiculous here in terms of property taxes. I think I may go down to florida and register my car there.

I live in Charlotte and the taxes are outrageous here too. Its not enough for them to take that money out of my paycheck every month. Nooooooooo! They gotta charge me for just owning a car and house which I don't really own since both are financed almost 100%! Oh yea, and then they hit you up for tags, inspection, and license fees too. Wanna buy something else after they have taken all that from you? Well that's gonna be another 7.5% in sales tax my friend. Bastards.
