Never got anything in the mail... but I went into daytona mazda anyway, got a free loaner(pt cruiser) they did the vaccume check and it was negative. While I was there I had them update starter, plugs, and got the service bullitan on squeally brakes for some free pads! I ate some free doughnuts and drank some free coffee.. I love my dealer!

By the way:

I am pretty sure that under this recall campaign, the NEXT time you take your car in for service, when they pull up your car's records in the system and notice that your call falls under mandatory recall inspection, they are obligated by Mazda to conduct the recall procedure on your RX-8. As far as I know, the only way for you to "hold out" on getting the recall is to not take your car in for service at all. Also, we all need this new flash anyway to get rid of the low RPM driving/not enough oil problem.
Mazda North American Operations

TO: Mazda Dealership General Managers, Service Managers, and Parts Managers

DATE: August 2006

SUBJECT: 2004-2006 RX-8 Voluntary Emission Recall Campaign 4206F

Dear Mazda Dealer:

Mazda Motor Corporation has decided to conduct an Emission Recall Campaign to reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and replace the spark plugs on certain 2004-2006 RX-8 vehicles produced from April 10, 2003 through June 1, 2006.

Due to PCM software calibration issues, the following conditions may result:
i) The oil-injection metering system may be inaccurate causing poor engine sealing of the combustion chambers resulting in drivability or emissions problems.
ii) Too much fuel may be injected at the time of engine start causing carbon to be deposited on spark plugs or plugs may be flooded, causing a difficult start condition. In addition, the catalytic converter may be degraded on some vehicles.
iii) (Only 2006 RX-8 vehicles are affected.) A test value indicating engine coolant temperature may be incorrectly shown on the service tool when a diagnostic function test is performed at dealership.

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by first class mail beginning August 31, 2006.

This package contains important information about emission recall campaign 4206F:

Attachment I Dealer Service and Parts information
Attachment II Repair procedures
Attachment III Owner notification letter

Important notice: California Department of Motor Vehicles, Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in conjunction with the California Air Resources Board and the Environmental Protection Agency for the State of Massachusetts and Vermont, have implemented the Registration Renewal/Recall Tie-In Program, which requires the completion of Emission Recalls prior to registration renewal. Mazda dealers must provide a Vehicle Emission Recall – Proof of Correction Certificate upon completion of the recall. Instruct owners to keep the certificate until needed for registration renewal.

Failure to perform applicable recalls before delivery can result in extensive dealer fines and penalties from the Federal Government. Therefore, you must complete this recall for all affected vehicles in your inventory prior to delivery.

To help you effectively perform this emission recall, Mazda has developed the following resources:

1. Service and Parts recall instructions follow (Attachment I), were e-mailed to your Service Department, and are also available on eMDCS and the MS3 (Mazda Service Support System) website.

2. Inspection and repair procedures follow (Attachment II), were e-mailed to your Service Department, and are also available on eMDCS and the MS3 (Mazda Service Support System) website.

3. We recommend using the enclosed report of registered owners in the dealer’s area to encourage customers to come in for the recall (with recall reminder postcards, for example). Dealers may use such owner information for the sole purpose of conducting and performing this emission recall, and for no other purpose. Using it for marketing activities is strictly prohibited and could subject your dealership to substantial fines and other penalties. The information in this report is protected by state privacy and other applicable laws regarding disclosure of personal and/or confidential, restricted or blocked information. It is the dealer’s responsibility to protect the confidentiality of owner records and prevent the release of information to other parties.

In California, privacy laws prevent the release of names and addresses on this report.

4. For technical assistance, call the Technical Assistance Hotline at (888) 832-8477.

5. For warranty questions, contact the Corporate Dealer Assistance Group at (877) 727-6626 (select option 2).

Please make certain that the appropriate personnel in your dealership are aware of these resources and are familiar with the details of this recall before responding to customer inquiries. If you have any questions, please contact your region manager or DCSM.

As a reminder, owners may request information about their eligibility for a rental car under the Mazda Driver’s Assurance Plan. Rental car reimbursements are available only vehicles 2001 or newer and within the mileage and time limitations under the Mazda New Vehicle Limited Warranty as stated in the Rental Car Reimbursement Program, Policy 12.0.

We apologize for any inconvenience this recall may cause you and your customers. Your understanding and support in carrying out this campaign is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Giblin
Director, Technical Services
Mazda North American Operations

New Motor!!!!!

hey guys, my car started messing up a few weeks ago, i have an 04 6spd with around 43k on it, took it to one dealer who was no help and told me nothing was wrong, took it to another dealer and a few days later they told me that i was getting a brand new motor free from mazda, they also said they would install a lightweight flywheel and a new clutch for free since the motor was out, i got a free rental car and they said my car would be fully cleaned and vacumed and i think a full tank of gas is also included, my car has been at the dealer for almost two weeks and i hopefully i will have it back by the weekend. i bought the car used and i'm excited that i get to break in the motor the right way and to see how much of a difference my new 8.5lb flywheel makes. my car was almost undrivable when i took it it, smelled funny, had no power, engine stuttered at 4k and 6.5k and was awful, i'm just glad mazda is taking care of this

better question is who is the other dealer, they sound like the best Mazda dealer in the country. Mine did not want to give me a loaner car, becuase I am past 50K miles. I aksed them to check the recall letter, and find the part where it says a loaner will be provided for doing this voluntary recall. I got my loaner.

When did this recall come about, does anybody know?

About a month ago, maybe more, I got an engine light. It was P0420 (Cat Converter running below efficiency). Made an appointment with Cooley Mazda near Albany, NY who took it in about a week or 2 after the light first came on. Now apparently, while I had somebody else bring the car up to the dealer for me, the light went off. It was off the entire time it was at the dealer too. The dealer saw I didn't have the latest computer update and flashed that for me and sent it back to me. There's no evidence that they even BOTHERED to look at my cat. coverter during the 5 days they had it, waiting for another part I needed to come in. Ever since then on top of it all, my car has sounded flat when I turn the key to start it up, almost like it's flooded. It's never had any problem starting, it just doesn't sound right at all, and probably takes about another half to 1 full second to start up compared to before.

No more than 2 days after getting it back, my engine light is back on again (same code). Sick of how Cooley Motors has worked on my car the last 2 times they've had it, I took it to Colonial Mazda in Danbury, CT. They were on the phone with me that next day saying how there was a recall out and that the spark plugs and cat. converter would be replaced. I asked if the sparkplug issue is why my car hasn't been starting right and they said probably. I just got my car back last night and happily I can report I don't have an engine light (yet), but my "flooded" startup issue hasn't gone away.

But in any case, being as that Cooley Motors had my car no more than about 3 weeks ago, was the recall in effect at that time, and why when I mentioned a problem with my cat. coverter did they not even think about mentioning that? Is it just coincidence that my car developed these symptoms for the recall at the same exact time as the recall?

Thumbs up

the first mazda dealer i delt with was montgomery mazda in charlotte, NC. i dont know if they didn't have the recall notice or what, but i brought my car in w/ a check engine light and told them my car was messing up. they took a quick look at it and reflashed my ecu, but before that they told me my check engine light was not on, and when i asked if the check engine light was in the memory they said no. and from my understanding there is a 30 day code memory in the ECU. they said to call them back if it kept messing up, i called them on the way home and told them i'd bring it back the next day, they had it for two days and could find nothing wrong with it they said. i came by picked up it, and took it to Tim Marburger Mazda in Concord, NC and 2 days later told me i was getting a new motor. i higly recoment Tim Marburger mazda, they have been nothing but wonderful. If any of you live in or around charlotte, i would higly recomend the drive to concord, its well worth it.

Yup, I wasn't much looking at which forum it was, I just pulled this topic up when doing a search on my engine startup issue. I'll have the check the paperwork when I get home to see if they looked at my starter. I know they addressed the sparkplugs, cat. converter and battery, but there's no reason my engine should sound this unhealthy when turning the key.

I purchased an '06 Sunlight Silver GT this past weekend. When going through the walkthrough the salesman informed me that the extra spark plugs in the glove compartment were because I need to schedule a time in 1 week to bring the car in for final inspection and they would put the new plugs in.

Does this have anything to do with the recall, or has that always been standard procedure? I think the car had been sitting around the lot for a bit, so it may fall within the time period.

I think it goes without saying that standard procedure dictates your car should be fully functional when you pick it up. Why they couldn't have taken the time to just do that work before you got it is sort of bizarre. It's just more hassle for everybody later.

Tennessee here. I got my recall letters about two and a half weeks ago. I waited to take my baby in to make sure the dealer had a little practice first.
Mine came through it ok. I got a starter, plugs and of coarse the re-flash. Runs great.

I'm in the Nashville area and I haven't received one. I bought my car used about a month ago so that may have something to do with it, though I immediately registered it on mymazda.com, so they have my info.

Took it in to the dealer Monday anyway and got it taken care of. Got new plugs, PCM flash and new starter (starter was part of a TSB).

Eh, you're a special situation - MNAO might not have searched for you new owners yet since the start of the recall? I'm totally guessing here... can we take this as a fly in the ointment?

There is also a starter/battery Special Service Program you might want to ask them about. If your car is still under warranty, I would push the issue with it not starting immediately. You may not want to mention that you know about the Special Service Program (a/k/a TSB), as some dealers don't like that we consumers have access to this stuff, it's really a tool for the dealers. I would just call again & make an appt. & tell them you want your starter & battery tested & that you want a print out of the results showing that they are okay. That way, you will basically force them to perform the SSP, that is, if your car qualifies. If your car doesn't qualify, you may end up paying for the tests just to find out your 8 doesn't have an issue. Up to you. But, my car went in for the recall & the starter/battery TSB was also done because I complained about my starter. All they had to do was look at the number on it & they could tell it was one that needed to be replaced.

I just bought my RX-8 last month, a phantom blue manual with the sport package, the build date was in April, should I be expecting a recall letter or is mine fine with no worries?
