There is another one like that but the last time I checked it cost $500. I am waiting for a price drop!
OD
That sucks! There has to be a decent market for it in the U.S.

I'm going to try to leave here around noon to drive up. Hopefully we can meet. I doubt my buddy (You know him as WRXBoy) is going with the Sequoa to pull the RX-7. So, you'll have to see it next time. If it wasn't so hot, I'd drive it, but I've removed everything from the engine bay that doen't make it drive fast or handle well. No A/C, P/S, Emissions, nothing, so a 6 hour drive in 90+ temperatures would be murder.

I just got my new R's mounted up toniht. I can't believe how crisp new RA1's handle. I was rolling them on the street for some light duty, and man I can't wait to see them at the track.

Mine came with a set of the dunlop tires. I really liked them. Some people didn't, but I thought they were good tires. They will definitely talk to you.

Woohoo one week from now we're @CMP!

Looks like I'll have my improved braking system in place for a nice and safe whoa and the pulleys installed on the mill for that little extra giddy-up..

Tires- Check, Oil - Check, New coat of Carnauba Wax - Check, I still need to fix my camera mount and clean the MAF sensor and that should be about it.

I am studying the track map and looking @ videos

Don't need no stinkin' Griggs, just a steady hand @ the wheel and consistent footwork...

That being said (And actually very true) , I'll probably freshen-up the suspension next year. The car, brake system, brake pads, brake ducts, pulleys, pedals, tires, helmet, gloves, shoes, track $$, etc have put a pretty serious crimp on my toy budget for this year...

May change your mind once you start upping the power of that unleasted beast! Know what you mean about the budget though. I hear those 615 you have are almost as good as the toyo ra 1's--comment?

I am extremely pleased with the 615's. On the track, they stick like the proverbial Velcro, they are very predictable, and forgiving.

On the road they are surprisingly quiet and they resist hydroplaining well (at least on my car)

For wear I am getting close to 10K miles + the March RA weekend + a beating at tgp and I think they will at least carry me through CMP and the next RA.

As far as comparing with the Toyo's I think they are the Ying and the Yang: the Toyo's are about the closest R to a street tire and the 615's are about the closest street compound to a track tire.

In terms of all out speed on the track somebody with a stiff setup and great skill would undoubteadly be faster with the Toyo's but keep in mind that the added stick comes with a price of less forgiveness .

IMO, they are both good and for a weekend warrior with a street suspension I think the 615's ease of use allow you to push further without fearing for your life which makes it fun and pretty fast.

The added bonus on the 615's is that you don't have to mess with carrying track wheels and when you're done running you just pack-up the cooler / tool-box and go home.

I will second what TA2 says about the 615's. They are great on track, more grip than I have the skill to use up, and then they are really quiet around town. I felt that with our car, they tend to hydroplane a little, the lighter car may have something to do with that.

I have about 10k miles, including TGPR which ate half of the tire tread, Road Atlanta, Roebling Road and a few rather spirited mountain trips on mine, and I am riding on the wear bars. That makes for no fun in the rain, but they are really sticky right now in the dry.

If money works out next year, I may buy another set as dedicated track tires, IMO they are a little too soft on the street, they tend to cut easily, which always leaves the fear of an unusable tire.

Hey guys, just got back from CMP, again. I competed in the Evo shoot-out, and well, I got SMOKED! Too many 'shop' cars in my class to be considered a 'common' man class.

However, I went faster than I ever have at CMP in the heat, and I am VERY pleased. The car lasted another event, and I found a new alignment, which netted me 2+ seconds per lap.

To give you guys an idea of how fast they Evos were running, here is a tickler. SCCA T1 record, which is like TTA for NASA, was 1:47:80's. The TTA car that the AMS shop brought, daily driven, driven 800 miles to the event, bolted on R compounds, and went out, went 1:45 !!!!

There are full on race cars which have never been that fast. Now, the unlimited Evos whent in the 1:44's, but it was so hot, that the track was heat soaked by then. For reference, Steve at CMP runs 1:56's, which is FAST for a street car. I ran a little under that, but having the lowest HP Evo at this event, literally, I did what I could.

Hope you guys have a great weekend, I may ride down Sunday or a visit with my daughter.

Also, I want to chime in on the 615 vs R compound discussion. Leave it to 32VCobra to put the 'end-all' on this discussion.

Here is a video, on either side of the screen is his Mustang, one side R compounds, the other Falken 215's (close to the 615's).

The R compounds ended up being @ 3 seconds per lap faster. Granted, Kumhos are MUCH softer than RA1's, so the results are a touch more dramatic, but still, at least 2 seconds per lap.

Here is the link......Video of R compound vs Falken.

One thing I found out this weekend is, the new NT01, Nitto, is about 8/10's of a second per lap faster than an RA1, per minute of track time. Meaning, at CMP, NT01s are about 1.6 seconds per lap faster. (high 1:50s per lap). I will be purchasing them next.

Interesting vid but not really comparing apples to apples

If the 2 vids were comparing the 615 with the RA-1 same day, same car, same driver, then you'd really know.

As it is there are to many different variables: different Falken, an all-out race Kuhmo versus a street friendly RA-1, A couple months between the runs with different track conditions, etc.

Of course, a race tire with a skilled driver and a setup that can take advantage of the extra stick will be faster than a good street tire any day (Except when it's raining).

My point is the rest of us weekend warriors in HDPE 1, 2 and 3 are still on the pretty steep side of the learning curve and we all have 4-5 or more seconds per lap left to be picked-up with a given setup just by honing our skills. In that light I wonder if it's worth extra $$ and hassle to go through the whole carrying and changing tires at the track bit for a questionnable 1-2 seconds per lap in a non-competitive environment?

Following the same logic as you get faster if you end up spinning-out or getting out of shape more often than you should with edgy tires then you'll be more consistent and ultimately faster on easier to drive rubber. (Not to mention feel better about your track performance)

My 2 cents..

Lookin' forward to seeing everybody this weekend.

No, I agree totally. You shouldn't upgrade grip, until your chassis can exceed the grip the tires can give. It took me sways and coil-overs to finally go on from the 215 Azeni.

Also, street tires are a TON more forgiving. You have a lot more chance to recover with streets.

Also, Falken 215 and 615 are pretty close to the same. I have run both, and has Steve. The 615 has the same grip, but doesn't get 'greasy' like the 215's do. The 215's would loose @3/10 per lap, and then fall to @8/10 per lap after they get greasy. 615's do a better job of staying consistent, and avoiding the greasy sensation.
