NASA Track Day- Roebling Road- Sept.24 & 25

Well, my Evo weighed in at 3380 with me in the car, which is, well, screw all you skinny b@stards.
Phlash, you never weighed, I would have corner-weighted your car, had we thought to put it on the scale. However, after driving it, it really is pretty close now. The only suggestion I would give you is to add some biased in back to take some of the severe oversteer out. This would stabilize your DSC more, allowing for more speed.

Here's a shot going into Turn 5 which was the hardest turn for me, but ended up being my favorite. I finally got the rim shot correct with the drift toward the right when the apex started decreasing. This is also where I went off-track on my first session. Yes, before anyone else says it, it was on the checkered lap too! :o We had a good laugh about it though and it kind of got the fear of going off-track out of me. I was just going into it too hot.
I love this course. I like it better than RA even though it took a good 4-5000 miles off my tires. And Chris is right, there are bits of rubber all over the bottom of the car. All over the inside of the wheels too. The course is technically challenging and just a blast to drive. We talked earlier about our favorite turns on courses, and now I'm going to have to change mine to either turn 3 or turn 5 at Roebling.
Dave, thanks for the ride and the drive in the Evo. You're a hell of a nice guy and a hell of an instructor! Damn, that's a fun as hell car. Those throttle on turns with the drift are just amazing! I'm still smiling to myself about it. 4-wheel drive is such a hoot to drive on the track. When the rear end kicks around, you just give it more gas and let the front tires pull you out. I was giggling like a little girl the whole time around the track in the Evo. It also let me feel better about my car and test those limits too. I got a little frazzled when I kicked it around about 40 degrees going into turn 4, but I got much more relaxed on day 2 and enjoyed the slight drifts. I want to go back to Roebling!!! Coming out of turn 8 at 94 - 101 mph is a hell of a rush.
I wish I could have gotten the R1's on. I'm going to buy a few spare wheel studs now to keep with me. I just looked up my manual, and the fronts are really easy to change out. I won't be caught without one again! I still had a blast with the street tires. There is always next time.
We're starting to get quite a reputation at NASA. We have to keep up the RX-8 turnout. Whether on track or working, it's both fun as hell. I had such a good time that I'm so exhausted now. The only thing keeping me awake at work today were memories of this weekend.
It was great seeing everyone. I had a weekend I don't think I'll ever forget. Now, onto the Rock!!!

Hey guys,
This Mark, the white 3rd gen driver at the Roebling event. Thanks for welcoming me into your group. It was a great time. I'm so impressed with your 8's - you all kicked a$$ out there! Keep the group events coming and maybe we can a broader rotary representation.

Hey Speedball,
Glad you came in for a look! It was great having another rotor head around dude. You have a beatiful car man. I can still hear that grunt on the straight when you turbo is kicking and I am watching you *** get smaller. Truelly it is a good sound.
Stay in tune, you never know what we are going to do.

NASA has a couple of great shots, on track at Roebling with your car and "a few" of our 8's, on their web site now!!
Nice to meet you, we will see you at the track. We are starting our prep for the ROCK.

Guys,
The only thing that would have made this trip better is if EVERYONE could have been there. I seriously suggest that spring of 2006 the ENTIRE gang plan on a trip To Roebling NASA event. All of us need to sign up for the same level (I dropped back to hpe1 just to have folks to run with) line up together and hit the front straight in a train. Now THAT would be a picture. The staging area is much better than RA --it has trees and grass and shade and the bathrooms and concessions are not an overnight hike. It also has MANY electrical outlets for you to use. If the family doesnt want to stay all day at the track then Savannah /Tybee Island is just a short drive away. A lot of the track is visable and I love the run off space. Just work toward a deadicated set of track tires and a couple of cans of stuff to get the rubber off your car (im sure AC8 will have suggestions for that) and you are good to go. Heck we even now know of a hotel that has plasma tv's and jaquzzi's IN YOUR ROOM. I think the track is actually easy on the car.
Now RA is my first love of tracks but I swear at Roebling powering through turn 3 in 4th gear and exiting at about 88-90 then slamming the brake for 50ft to turn 4 line up turn 5 double apex short rim run turn then power out in 3nd drifting to the rumble and feeling your dsc cry for momma just as you let up for the carosel is a feeling you will not forget. The esses at RA are great and turn 6 is great but i swear the above sequence in like a lonngg turn 6 at RA feeling. The G force in turn 3 (gradual left handed sweeper) in my car while my instructor was driving and I was in the passenger seat was so strong that I had to use my left elbow to grip the left part of the passenger seat to stabilize myself so I would not fly out the damn window! The session after I finally learned the lines a little and had a better idea of the limits of my car I swear I almost had blisters on my hands from the steering effort AND holding the hell on. Maybe need a 4 point?
Better get back to work.

Home at last
Well, after heading out of Atlanta at 2pm on Friday, I am finally home! For those who don't know, I hit something in the road in Savannah and it jumped up and smashed into my gas tank. The result was a broken fuel pump. Of course, no one stocks this so it had to be ordered. It came in today, was installed, and now I am home after a 4 hour drive. My spirit was wounded but not broken. Thanks to all the friends who stood by me on Sunday.
That being said, I can tell you that Saturday was a fantastic day. I really enjoyed Roebling Road. It is an awesome track and I must go back as I did not get my fill. I spent my first session learning the line around the track. My second session was spent exporing other lines and learning how well R Compounds stick. This left my third and fourth sessions to learn the rhythm of Roebling. You get into a groove there and just hang on as you dance from one turn to another using the gas pedal to control weight transfer to place the car where you want it. It really is fun. I am cooking up a quick video and will post as soon as I can.

It is all the car, the Evo was well prepped by AMS, I just give the right inputs here and there.
You guys don't get too excited, the MOST fun I had was wheeling the two RX8's around. I could drive Lego's car harder than Phlash's, because it was more forgiving with the stock suspension. However, Phlash's felt GREAT, especially with the DSC turned off. I couldn't believe how neutral the car was. I will never forget the look on Phlash's face when I asked if he could fee the car sliding. It was GREAT, but carrying 90+ in turn 3, I didn't want to attempt to be a drift champion.
Nabil, I watched the vid, and I have to admit, you are dr smooth on the wheel.

good video nabil, i wondered if that was lego that you went by. Loooks like a fun track, with only one passing zone, or was there another one for us novice drivers.
Glad you got back ok.
