Paint rims black?
I want to paint my oem rims black because another digbat hit me in a parking lot and one of my rims has ugly green streaks on it, plus all of my rims have curb rash :P
Anyone know of a place to get something like this done in S. Miami? How much will this run me? I was told some people have had it done for as cheap as $70.
Better question, any here that can do that kinda work, and Ill pay you $70? hehe, lemme know.

I think it would cost more then that unless you have some sort of hook up. The best thing to do is remove the tires from the rims and use a sander to fix the curb marks. Then take them to a place to get them painted.
Back before gunmetal rims were the "thing to do" I used to spray paint my rims. Pepboys had a Cast color spray paint that workd very well and stuck like super glue. Duplicolor also sells rim paint now. It's worth a shot is you under stand how to spray paint in light soft coats, dont try to 1 shot it like many people will. If you screw up a few times and cant get it right then take it to a shop. This is of course if you plan to take them to the shop anyways.

Something like 100 grit to fix the damaged areas. Around a 400 grit it what I'd use to prep the area. With the 400 you dont need to remove the paint you just need to scuff it all up so the paint your using has something to grab on to.400 grit is about as low as you can go with a grit to avoid scracthes showing in the paint.
Also dont SCRUB with the 400 just use it lightly. Be sure to degrease the rims and after your 100% done with the prep rub it all down with alcohol and dont touch the work area again! You dont wanna put your finger oil on your freash cleaned area.
Then just piant in light coats and take your time. Light coat means spray a "little" bit then let it sit for atleast 10min before the next coat. One trick to make spray paint work well it to let all the layers dry. If you just slap a ton of paint on at one time the top will dry fast and the bottom will take alot longer to dry.

Did you do this with your tires still on? Mask the tires and just spray the outside faces of the rim, or did you pull your tires and do the whole thing?
If so, Ill give it a shot this week for sure. Im very into DIY stuff if I can go that route. Like you said I can always give it a shot and if it doesnt look like I like it THEN I can take it somewhere to get done.

If you plan to do it with the tires. I've jammed index/post/note cards between the rim and tire before. You can also just tape it off if that doesnt work. Just clean the tires really well first so the tape wont let go as easy.

Thanks for the info, Im on my way out to Autozone now to buy 3 or 4 cans of black and 2 or 3 cans of clear... seems the trick to getting them to look nice is a good clear finish on top of an enemal-type black. Im trying without removing the tires, as I dont have another set of rims to put on the car in the meantime. Ill be doing it one by one today untill I get them right. Ill post pictures to let you guys see how I did, hopefully it will come out looking half decent and I wont have to foot the extra money to have a shop do it.
Thanks again Trekk

once you got a few coats of clear on you can try to go for the glass look, BUT you need a real buffer (not a 25$ orbital) and some skill with it.
Wet sand with 1500grit sand paper and buff buff buff and soon it will look like glass.
You need some skill and practice to pull this off so I dont suggest it unless your really willing to start over![Smilie](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Just info for the future if you find stuff to practice on.

I have a good idea why dont you just buy a set of new OEM rims with tires off someone in here at 400.00 and save your time and energy..with the time you put into doing all this work and the money you may spend getting it done in a shop if it doesnt look the way you would like..it will only make sense...and you wont be without a car while they paint...then again you may have aftermarket rims and want to experiment in which case let us know how it comes out... Good luck

From what I hear, you havent read up on any of this yourself. All three accidents I was at a standstill, hit by a vehicle in a parking lot. Dont tell me I dont know how to drive in Miami, Ive been living here my entire life and Ive been driving since I was old enough to see over the steering wheel. My ability to drive has nothing to do with being hit WHILE IM NOT DRIVING, but at a stop. Ive never been in an accident while on the road DRIVING.
Dont speak about matters which you have no knowlege of, especially when in the process you question my ability to drive.
