At the same time your not going to lose a whole lot. Just go slower on the highways

So by making it slower and getting worse gas mileage, it is improving it? Hmmm. OK to each their own I guess. I still think the factory rear end is too much already and it should come with a 4.10. That would definitely improve the car.

12. Use the transmission properly. If your vehicle has a manual transmission, shift gears as soon as the engine can run smoothly in the next gear. Low gear at 20 mph gives only about two-thirds the mileage as high gear at the same speed. In second gear, it's four-fifths the mileage you'd get in high. With an automatic transmission, lifting your foot slightly off the accelerator will make the transmission shift sooner.

yeah, that's been proven time and time again, getting into high gear as soon as possible is always the most fuel efficient, I fell on the floor laughing when I read the post about getting better mileage with a shorter gear, hoo boy ...

The 4.778 gear will improve stop-and-go city gas mileage (50-75% of most peoples' driving) and greatly improve acceleration (real world driving, no insane 1/4 mile tests on public roads). Highway mileage will suffer to a small degree.
If your concerned about the highway miles, just drive 65-75 mph instead of the 80mph+ most us RX-8er have a habit of on the highway . I think there's a 7-8mph spread at RPM between the 4.10 and 4.77. Obeying the speed limit laws are a good thing...

You can still drive faster on the hwy if you want your just gonna lose a few MPG. Much like everything else if life you don't get everything, but you do get a choice.

i think there is a 7-9 mph spread from 4.444 to 4.778 ( in 6th gear at redline)..i've been looking it up.
i'd have to say no to the better gas milage...can't see how that would ever come about from changing to this set up...but i woudl see how acceleration would improve slightly......only one real way to find out i supose.
did that person who had feed a 4.778 gear and a Kaaz l.s.d. ever post there impressions of it? anyone ? anyone?

I don't think changing the final will improve MPG, specially because our foot will get heavier . I don't care about that, if i wanted to get better gas milage I would have got a hybrid car instead and coming from 13 mpg FD the 8 is a improvement. I just want to know if this is worth it. I want to do this since I do track my car and this will improve exit acceleration I believe.

if i were to get the 4.778 gear for acceleration, and then later decided that i want to go FI would the 4.778 gears still be better for acceleration or would i need to get smaller ones like stock or 4.1?

i will be buying this MOD soon. I dont really care if it's going to either give me better or worst in the MPG.. I know my City for a fact will be the same on the highway its going to hurt me BUt whatever.
As long as my RX8 is a little bit quicker i'll be happy. Im really getting bored of the speed of my car its not quick enough.
