Cool advice needed

i just purchased a rx8 after researching it my entire tour in iraq. however, i never found an article that said when it would be best to shift from each gear when racing or going for time so any experience ya'll could share i'd love to hear it. i was also wondering what mods any of you have done that you would recommend and what mods you would discourage. so far all i've put in is the standard K&N but it doesnt help much. well thanks for your help and any other bits of random advice would be appreciated. zoom-zoom

well i kinda bought it a bit of both. i bought it used but it only had about 2800 miles on it. i'm guessing it was either their demo car or someone just really disliked it after having it for a month. i'm just curious if ya'll could help me out w/ any of those questions since most of you have modded your cars yourselves and have actually seen the pros and cons of everything you've done so i can save time and money. again any advice would be really appreciated

If your pushing it to its limits shift at 9.5k but dont make a habit of doing this everyday. When im driving quasi hard on the street i'll shift around 7k rpm... thats more than enough for me.. but i'm boosted. For NA i would keep the shifts under 8k and you should still have plenty of power. I think max torque is around 5.5k so make sure to shift a few thousand above that.

As far as mods go... that is personal preference. My only advice is to come to a meet and see them first hand. What part of the gulf area do you live in?

yeah i keep gettin told by everyone i talk to that the car actually likes being driven hard and that it doesnt to anything to the engine but that just doesnt make much sense to me. maybe ya'll help me w/ this one too, but i was talking to one of the car salesmen after i had purchased the car and he had told me that it actually redlines at 12K

Uh... no. The rev limiter is right around 9.5k RPM. The renesis motor has the potential to go higher... but to do that would take exessive engine work.

I agree... i wouldnt drive hard all the time. I wish i could find the s2k BMI clip where the motor blew and a giant flame shot from underneath the car. Afterwards they were interviewing the drivers and tuners... very good info about the dangers of driving at red line.

UPDATE:

BAM!!! Unfortunately this clip isn't translated or has the interview after the race. At first i thought he downshifted too early, but later they explain that the tuner increased the redline on the 2.2L S2k motor to match the redline on the 2.0L S2k motor. I guess it didnt work so well.
BTW, the guy screaming at the end is the driver in the blown motor car. He's actually a pretty famous JGTC Driver and a regular on the show... very good.

Actually it was a 2.0 litre but the tuner stroked it to 2.2, however the internals was not matched with the higher displacement unlike what Honda did with the revised version.
