so during this 3-4 weeks...will we see pics, dyno runs, and maybe an explanation of what you guys are doing different so as to not repeat what K&N and RE have already done...because it makes no sense what so ever to buy an intake for this car unless it is "tuned" and i'm not going to fork over $230 for a polished intake with a huge a$$ filter and heat shield..it's pointless....

i've worked with you guys before and your reputable enough to put your money where your mouth is...hopefully you guys have put a little more thought into the design instead of following the trend to just throw an intake out on the market to get it saturated...

AEM first visited the RX-8 before you were even registered on this forum Does that work for you?

The AEM intake is different from what anyone has seen yet. Once I get a production piece it will be dyno'd for the website for everyone's view.

Saw AEM at SEMA and talked to one of the peoples about the coldair intake for the rx-8. he didnt give much on it but said it would be a few months and they were wanting to get better results out of it.

If it is different from anything else we have seen so far, hopefully it is similar to the design I've talked about for the last year or so. Make it tunable and not just a filter on a tube.

I am definitly waiting for the AEM. I want to do exhaust and canzoomer at the same time, but will probably do intake first. I had an AEM on a Honda I used to have and the power it made was actually quite good so this one should be alot better since this engine is better than a POS SOHC honda motor.

Well, what were those pictures that somebody posted links to? I hope they aren't representative of the real AEM intake because they looked suspiciously like the Filter On Tube intakes you see everywhere. Nothing "different" about that!

except for Noise and a lil kick when VTEC (with lotsa noise at this point) goes nutz i saw very lil difference from stock wtih a short ram intake on my civic.

as far as the rx8 goes.. i dont want more noise i just want power. No major gains .. no use for me

Actually you shouldn't have that high of an expectation. Mazda did a LOT of R&D on the intake and it is a very efficient system. I'm not saying that there won't be any gains but just don't expect too much.

I have a 2000 Civic EX and to compare it's intake to that of an RX-8 is a joke. The Civic intake is very long. It is also very small. There are many baffling chambers for noise. All of this creates turbulence which hurts power. The air is also picked up from inside the engine bay. When you install an aftermarket cone filter on a Civic, it gets rid of this maze of resistance. A short arm intake on the Civic actually cost me power. The aluminum piping really picks up alot of heat. The cone filter also breathes better but it is exposed to even more engine bay heat than the factory pickup point. They are also very loud since all of the baffling is gone. That's why it was there in the first place. I custom made a long system with 3" pipe (because smaller is a waste of effort). I placed the filter in the front lower right of the car where it is getting cold air. I also heavily shielded the pipe from heat. The result is a very noticable increase in power and not near as much intake noise. I even had a gain before I insulated it due to the length of the system being better tuned for the car's powerband. I get about 3-4 more mpg since the upgrade! That is alot. I don't expect an RX-8 to get this though.

The whole point of typing all of this is to show that comparing a certain companies intake for one car is in no way a good comparison of what it may do on another. The stock RX-8 system is pretty good. I do admit that it can be improved but don't soley judge the improvement based on what other cars get.

Thumbs down K&N

I bought the K&N typhoon and it didn't work well at all. It made my car stall and produced a terrible idle. The only difference was in the sound that actually shook the dash, which I thought was terrible. I uninstalled it and returned it to K&N. They said they had many similiar complaints.

95%...

The new tooling needed for the RX-8 isn't being cooperative to say the least. We have not forgotten about you guys.
