Ok guy's all I know is my car is going in on Monday cause I offered and Ben took me up on it. I do not know anything about the intake itself.
I do know that the V2 intake on my S2000 does make a noticable difference and has a loud snarl to it, but only above 6000 rpm, or full throttle. Moderate around town driving is fine. Hopefully this Mazda application will have similar characteristics.

Its gotta to be a cold air arm that extends out in front of the car. A short arm will only draw in heated air - not good. They even have a part number for it: 21-485. I called them today to ask about it, and they said the main problem IS the sound - it is too loud currently. So, I assume they want a car to do some sound research I bet.
Hope they figure it out :D

it would NOT be a V2 as far as i know because i have talked to Ben and he has told me it is a AEM CAI not a V2 simply because the V2 piping is too large to be fitted inside the 8's engine bay.

I can't wait to see what they come out with. Every AEM product I have put on a car has never given me any problems at all. So I will patiently wait for their intake and buy one up as soon as it is ready!

Ben, look at the market. The K&N Typhoon (which required a heat shield in the end), Rotary Extreme, AutoExe, FEED (underdevelopment), Blitz, HKS... there is a pattern here. Really it's all falling into two camps... ones short arm intakes with heat shielding like Rotary Extreme or the sheilded cone like Blitz. The only company that seems to possibly trying something different is Racing Beat. No telling what their prodcut will be like, but it'll produce power and not as much noise as K&N. I'm stating the obvious here when I'm saying stay away from traditional intakes. Be a little daring... try to work on something different. Search this forum for postings... there is a good discussion going on about the SDAIS system and there have been some about the VFAD. Use the ideas being tossed out there by various people and let's see something different. A different airbox and VFAD could show some real promise...

Yup, the existing intakes out there are basically derived off of the traditional design, ie. FOR PISTON CARS. Not much research and testing has been done to those units, and that is why none of them have produced satisfactory results. I think SR Motorsports' intake was heading the right direction. Those short ram intakes are no good, just as useful as those big double decker wings on a Civic.

well, i don't think it's that these style (short arm type) are only for piston engines. If honda, etc., wanted to, they could make an equally impressive system for their cars. But they don't. It would have been easy (and cheap) for Mazda to stick a pipe and filter on the end of the intake, but they didn't; they engineered a really nice intake system. Since they didn't take the easy way it's not going to be easy to do better, esp. if all you do is stick a pipe on the end. This method works fine for Hondas, etc, because there is so much restricted airflow to begin with. It doesn't fly on the '8 like it does on other cars.
Sure, many will jump on a new product, but many of us are waiting to be wowed. If companies want to charge us several hundred dollars for a shiny metal tube, that is their business. Anyone can make a short arm intake or cold air intake for the '8. People on this forum are making them. If they want respect from the community, they need to put some thought / engineering into these designs. Respect is what will get repeat business, which is how companies like Racing Beat operate.

but it's a cost and profit issue. i mean, i doubt if many of these companies actually employ people who understand (i mean in the fullest sense, not the hazy no-numbers internet version) the principles that would be employed in creating a serious performance intake.
think also of the manufacturing costs, how they would have to re-think their factory to produce all these different (like ACTUALLY different, not just assorted lengths, diameters, and degree bends in the same stuff) components that would be needed to cover the entire market base they already have.
making stuff that's really, really good is not normally within the realm of the mass production aftermarket company. they make things that look spectacular, sound spectacular, and add an aura of enhancement and performance. it doesn't actually matter that people don't realize they're gaining like a measly 2% increase in efficiency (and in the case of the RX-8 i will gladly state a REDUCTION in efficiency) for $400 or $500 or $600.
these companies like weapon r and injen and whatever just don't have anyone with the brains to design the sort of thing that's really goign to make a significant difference, outside of thinking to replace a bunch of intake resonators and a 8 sq.in. surface area filter with a straight peice of piping and a bigger filter (for 8 owners, the filter is already more than sufficient in area and flow efficiency, which you can swap anyway, and replacing the vfad with a tube isn't... well, obviously isn't the thing to do). they don't have the capital to invest in the kind of machinery and people it would take to manufacture these sorts of things. the market also doesn't have the demand, or money that would support such a move, either.
things are the way they are, but i'd like to reiterate that you should save the money from the intake and get a computer like teh Canzoomer.
