AF Short shifter issue

AF Short shifter issue

I just installed it today with no issues. Runs fine feels great but on my way to walmart about 20 minutes ago I heard a quick grind. This never happened till I put the new shifter in. Any ideas on what the deal is? I don't want to mess up my transmission.

Not to mention I cant get it into 6th unless I go to 5th first most of the time. wtf?

Yeah sometimes I haul *** 0-35ish and shift to neutral for a bit then shift to 6th but that still doesn't explain the grinding noise when I drive normally. I only heard it once and it was brief as I was accelerating to 50mph.

you shouldn't skip gears. bad for the syncros. i've seen an s2000 tranny screwed up because of skipping gears. hopefully that isnt the cause of your grinding.

I'm not grinding it, I don't shift it into the gear until it lets it slide into it. If I forced it into a gear after redlining of course its going to grind. And you can skip gears as long as you wait till it lets you slide it in after the RPMS drop. Plese dont assume things.

well it hasnt happened since and I drive it everyday to work. It grinded for about 3 seconds in 6th gear as I was driving at about 50 mph on the highway. Haven't noticed anything since, maybe it was just a fluke?

The grinding is probably just a fluke, it took me a little while to fully get used to the new shifter (even though I was smiling like a crazy man on my first drive after putting it in). However, I too have occasional issues with shifting into 6th. It just feels like it hits a block, and I have to bring it back into neutral (or just between 5 and 6) and try again a few times, which never happened with the stock shifter.

I'm not too concerned about it though, since under any performance driving 6th gear is never used.

i wasn't assuming you were forcing it into gear.

skipping gears has nothing to do with grinding, but it damages the syncros which will eventually lead to grinding. that's why i said hopefully that's not your problem.

syncros arent made to match speeds with that much of a difference. they're designed to match 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, 5-6, 6-5, 5-4, 4-3, 3-2, 2-1. not 1-6.

take it with a grain of salt, but it's not something i would do in my own car, nor would i recommend anyone to do it.

I have had it happen once but I think I accidentally pushed it down going into 6th and I think it was going into the "reverse" gear and it made a grinding noise.

All that a synchro does is match the speed of the clutch/pressure plate to the speed of the gear you're shifting into. The only thing that matters is the RPM differential between the two... they aren't "designed" to be shifted in order. If you redline in 1st gear, and then shift immediately to 6th, there is a huge RPM differential which will result in the 6th gear synchros having to do more work (which will wear them out quicker) to match the speeds. However, if you shift from 4th to 6th at 40 MPH, you're only making them do a tiny bit more work than if you would have shifted into 5th first. Plus if you double clutch when skipping gears it's a non issue.

the issue is not the shifter. it likely is you..
