Not sure and am curious of the responses you will get. Do you need a change or want a change? Why?

I would say the Mazda Speed unit, or the ACT one. Unless you are planning to go FI there is no need to upgrade your stock tranny.

my clutch is bad and from what i have read it is not very strong and prone to slipping. i need to replace it but i do not want to buy stock.

mazdaspeed, ACT and Bonez are the only clutches i have seen so far. i am unfamiliar with Bonez but the cost seems reasonable 399.99 for disc and plate set. rx8garage.net has the clutch for 262.00 and the cover/disc for 345. also a fair price. but ACT clutch kit is 929.00. "This performance clutch holds 50% more power than the stock unit which tends to slip." so far that is all i have been able to come up with.

are there any other brands that i have missed? which brand would be the best choice? which one would be most cost affective (best bang for the buck)?

I got the ACT cluth disk which wasn't that much. I forget the number exactly. Yo ucan call srmotorsports and ask them. But I have about 28k miles on my car and the oem never slipped on mine so I don't see the big deal for a better one unless you have FI

Bigblockbeater,

Notice that price (SR Motorsports) includes the lightweight aluminum flywheel & counter weight. Right there you are looking at abot $400-$500. You may want to give them a call and ask specifically about just the pressure plate, or clutch disk. If you are just looking for the least expensive you can get an OEM friction plate unit at www.mazdatrix.com for cheap.

mazdaspeed also makes a aftermarket clutch. I think it came out to 600 with everything included.

ACT does not make a clutch kit for the RX-8. Im assuming that SR is just taking the RX-7 clutch kit and using a stock RX-8 throwout bearing and seal.

Do you guys know anything about the MS clutch? I mean, in what way its better than the stock?
It has to be better, right? I only remember that its made from 'non-asbestos', dunno what that is...

ewll most of this price of the mazdaspeed clutch come form the fact that you need to buy thier pressure plate fot it to work..theiere clutch is about 300 verses about 160 for a new stock one. can't remember if i ever saw any stats on teh mazdaspped one though (never saw #'s for increse over stock or how much torque it coudl take). sorry fo rnot being too helpful

It is true that SR Motorsports is using an ACT RX-7 clutch disc, and Exedy does make a clutch/flywheel kit for the RX-8. You can find it at Pettit Racing. It is expensive as hell though; not sure if you can get it without the flywheel, and what that would do for the cost.

I like Tilton. A 4 plate is nice but I think a 3 plate might cut it ok for an RX-8 with "modest" power goals :D . I can get a full assembly with flywheel in 7.25in for $4500. I don't know how much it is for a 3 plate without flywheel in 5.5in.

about the ms clutch...according to my local dealer, there is not a difference in the stock and ms clutch. i know i know. i asked him why and he didn't have an answer.

i would like to keep the price under $1,000. i am leaning toward the Bonez parts right now. a firend of mne said Bonez is a good brand.

I seriously doubt there is no difference between the Mazda Speed pressure plate & clutch disk and the OEM unit. In Japan the MS RX-8's have slightly more hp, so at least the MS tranny is built to handle that and then some. Dealers as a lot are a pretty uninformed bunch. Unless your local dealership is a MS authorized dealership, and even then you might want to fing the specialist in that dealership to talk to him about the MS products. Or just call RX8Garage and talk to them and get the specs. In general the people on this board know far more than the people who work at the dealership.
