agency power pulley problems!!!

First off, it works great. I actually feel a difference in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Subtle, but noticable.

But I CAN't KEEP THE BELTS FROM MAKING THE TICKING NOICE!!!!!

I have no CEL (read staticlag's thread and others and did the brake trick). I do get a flashing CEL when pushing her. Got it up to 100 and the CEL started flashing and then it went out. Now that COULD be a problem with my stock cat. I have an '04 that has 67K miles on a stock cat. From what I hear, that's actually VERY good. Lately I have gotten the whole CEL and rev limit cut to ~6500rpm. I read somewhere on here that that is a cat issue. Had a slight smell, but much more noticable when pushed. CEL went away and I've driven conservatively. No worrys. Got an RP supercat sitting in the basement (can't get it on because the bolts on the stock are EXTREMELY ON THERE). Hopefully that will clear that up.

... oh yeah the pulley. Sorry.

The pulley belts are tight. I don't see any wobble. I've adjusted them to make them looser thinking they are too tight. Noise stopped. Started driving and at a stop, ticking is back. Get home, adjust pulleys. Ticking doesn't stop. Get fustrated and take a nap. Get up and start the car. Ticking stopped. Revved a little. No ticking. Drive half a mile and never over 45 and ticking starts again. Check belts. No wobble. Try to adjust. Still ticking. Adjusts some more stops ticking. Drive some more. Starts TICKING. Wait a while ticking stops. ON, AND ON, AND ON, AND ON, .....

WHAT GIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually I had the same issue, and my cat is stock. Mechanic said it might be the pulley overrevving the engine to quickly and the fuel can't catch up. I have both the pulley & the flywheel. Not sure what the exact issue is, but I got the same thing where when I revved it up, or even if I was accelerating from lane to lane on the freeway the blinking CEL light would come on. Then when I was down in SD a few weeks ago th solid CEL came on. Drove it to the dealership (freaking out the whole 150 miles back up here to LA), but he said everything checked out OK. Just cleared it. I haven't revved it up since, just keeping everything below 6000 RPM.

I replaced the pulley w/ AP + green air filter...as well as swapped out to a midpipe on the same night...I am not getting the ticking sound at all (05 ~19.5k) and well...after the reset...and one week of easy driving no CEL...

went out for a "drive" and after a 5hr "spirited" affair with speed...I got the CEL which was to be expected as the ECU figured out something was up w/ O2 readings...but still no ticking...

I think your first step should be to swap out to he supercat...I had to "bounce" my factory bolts on the floor a few times to pop em out. they were pressed in so you'll need some concrete...preferably a curb or step so you can tap them out one at a time. once the cat's been replaced hopefully that will eliminate the possibility that its implicated somehow. based on the reported "smell"...you can almost tell the cat is in its final death throws...

I would also suspect that if you got blinking CEL at higher rpms it might be your plugs/coils or misfiring??

Fanman...driving below 6k is simply wrong...period...

Can you tell where the ticking is coming from? When you replaced the pulley did you make sure you left in the parts that needed to be left in? All the bolts tightened appropriately?

I opened her up tonight 3 runs to 7K, and it didn't have any issues. I have an 04' and I just swapped out the ignition coils & put in HKS Twin Power ignition amplifier. Hopefully this might help me burn a little more completely.

it's definitely coming from the belts.

if that is the case I suggest you pull the belts off & inspect them .

interesting I'm installing this pulley this week I have a cai and a rp cat... hopefully wont have a problem...did u torque the four bolts to manufacture spec? Which belt did you use, I know this pulley is suppose to come with a replacement belt. I also know if the belt is crack it will make some unusual noises..

Good point. One question though, are the old belts the same size as the new ones? If so, I think I'll try the old belts to see if the make the noise also.

The belts looked fine but maybe I should take them off and get a second opinion.

The old belts are different size .

Suggestion : just take off the air con belt to start with & see if the noise persists . Process of elimination .......

ya...I would imagine that the only reason you could get a "tick" sound would be if something was installed off-center. perhaps a bolt in the pulley or something is coming loose. I would remove everything and reseat and replace. The new belts that come with the pulley are different than the old ones so be sure you are using them. Also I am not sure if its possible to put the belts in the wrong place but you might want to check that as well. Be sure you are using the longer belt in the right place and its sitting properly in the grooves.

belts are in the grooves good and look ok. That's the next thing I'm trying when I get home. Take the pulley out and reinstall it.

okay, I took the belts off and started the car. No noise. Put back on the belts. No noise. Revved a few times, twice to 9K. Back at idle no noise. Drove around. No noise. Redlined twice. No noise. Got on the main road and let her have it and came to a stop light. ... it's back.

*sigh* I guess tomorrow I'll pull off the pulley to see if there is something behind it. Ran out of light for the day.

Just out of curiosity did you reset the Eccentric shaft positional sensor by doing the stop on the brake 2913759801237 times thing?

ok so all bolts are tight, belts are good, belt tension is good. no wobbling and no CEL. All belts are in the groves and pulley has be removed and reinstalled and you still have the same problem after a few revs.. Is it a constant ticking noise or does it get faster when u accelerate? Maybe the ticking is from the alernator? since it is underdriven maybe its not spinning fast enough?

It get's faster as rpms climb. Fooled around with it last night and I must say, I definitely need a socket allen wrench.

Say stealth-x8 (or anyone with ap pulley) have a GOOD picture of the front of the pulley in the car? The center where the bolts go in especially. Maybe something is amiss.

^thanks dude. In the mean time, I've got to take my car up to Rotary Performance to put in my cat. Could do it myself but the bolts are literally fused in place. He quoted me at about $80. Not too bad I guess. He also said he will check out the pulley to see if I missed something.

One question, did your ap pulley come with instructions? Mine didn't.

I was hoping it would but all i got was a belt and the pulley i was actually searching to see if anyone here knew the torque specs for the bolts so i dont strip them. $80 for the install isnt bad i paid like 75 and i think it was worth it..sounds nice and with the pulley it should sound nicer. Do u want the stock pic? Let us know what he says about the pulley I personally think it maybe be those four bolts.

That's cool.

I figured out what my problem is and fixed it with the ultimate tool ... chopsticks. I removed the pulley and inspected the sprocket it sits on. Come to find out that the two studs that are used to line up the pulley and sprocket itself were missing. So I went to a Chinese restaruant and got some chopsticks to stick in the holes so the pulley and sprocket were aligned. Then I just lined up the pulley and sprocket with the holes, made sure the chopsticks held them in place, and screwed in two of the bolts enough so it would stay still and in place. Removed the chopsticks and bolted it down and vwah-lah, ticking has not been back since.

I also got my hi-flo put in yesterday. OH MAN ... she DEFINITELY moves now!!! I think the old cat was so clogged up (heck, it was cracked on the inside) that she just couldn't breathe. Well she can breathe now and she sounds awesome!!! I've got an AEM CAI and a Borla catback also. It's not as loud as I thought it was going to be. The mechanic, who races and works on nothing but rotaries, street and raced prepped, said he was kind of shocked it wasn't that bad at idle to 4K rpms. Heck I thought it was going to set off all sorts of car alarms. It actually sounded quite pissed off, in a good way. But all in all, it's really not that loud ... at least until WOT. Then yes, she's loud.

Now for the RB street flash and flywheel!!! And maybe somehow get my MS springs and shocks in. They are just sitting in my bedroom. MAN THIS IS EXPENSIVE!!!!
