Had one crank pulley made with 10% under drive that gave 8.9hp/3.9lbs... Testing was done on a stock RX8 demo with 3700 miles on the odometer...

These are real numbers..."

Do you have the pulley set on your car? Have you ever had an underdrive pulley set on any vehicle of yours before? I have underdrive Pulley on my 300zx, with an aftermarket electric cooling fan (replaced the clutch fan) and never had an issue with the alternator or cooling, even in 96F+ hot weather in North Carolina summers.

I have the SR pulley set on the RX-8 and never had a problem with the Alternator or cooling either....in fact I would say at high RPMs the underdrive pulley is better for cooling since the waterpump will not cavitate at high RPMs. oh yeah, the AC still blows nice and cold on both of my cars.

So if CORTC got 9HP from an underdrive pulley at 10% underdrive. I think SRs @ 20-25% undedrive(not sure which), would seem feasible to yield 12HP..not the zero you stated.

I would agree with you that the stock pulley's are very very light(no harmonic balancer), thus the HP gain would be mainly from a reduction in parasitic drag.

Also underdrive pulley's, in theory should allow you alternator, water pump and AC compressor to have longer useful lives.

Cheers
I did some further research on this including looking at some old dyno sheets from my 95 302 Mustang and this is what I found out...

First on the V8 mustang the pulley sets available do not replace the harmonic damper they only replace the pulleys... Pulleys on a mustang only yield about 5-7hp in the best case...

Why only 5-7hp, well because the net change in mass and parasitic loss in relation to the size of the engine is smaller... That V8 has allot more mass moving around than the Renesis...

You will see more freed up hp in the Renesis because the rleative change in mass and parasitic loss due to the pulleys is greater... Why do you think they use titanium connecting rods on F1 cars, because the reduced mass frees up HP at any given RPM and also allows them to spin the engine much faster with less stress...

What I suggest is that anyone who wants to comment on the affects of pulleys go out design some, have them manufactured then test them in the real world on a dyno... The you will have something pratical to add to the discussion...

3. Complete High Flow Exhaust System

4. Stainless High Flow Midpipe

For 2099.00

Claims to boost HP almost 40 HP

Then I was looking at changing the flywheel.

Anyone have an opinion on this modification? I was looking to do this within 6 to 7 months, well maybe sooner.

Thank you all for you advice.

RX8sportscar

I have this very same kit installed in my 8... you can see my thread here https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-aftermarket-performance-modifications-23/just-installed-43576/ for pictures.

Was the hp gain noticeable? Yes
Is it a 40 hp gain? Sure doesnt feel like it, but havent had a dyno since installing.

That becomes a matter of sound preference. I did not want to go too crazy loud, so I bought the Racing Beat because of their experience and reputation. It had the exhaust note I was looking for. There is a link here somewhere with all the choices lined up for comparison.

My personal best hp gain

Foreword: This is just a pointless post meant to get on a soap box about the general issues of making power on my 04 rx8. The views that are expressed are not necessarily the opinions of rx8club.net staff and in no way affiliated with rx8club.net. Anyways....

I like my 8 a lot. Nice style, cool interior, and all the other bla bla bla......................

I figured that eventually a great arsenal of parts would lead to 250-300 whp since the heritage of the 7 was so great. Even after spending 1000's this car just wont't make significant power for those who have money in the REAL world. Most people don't have 10k at their immediate disposal to get this thing going. Compounding this is even with those who have the change to build this thing have to remind themselves that the engine is tapped out and motor failure will happen (when who knows but I wouldn't be surprised if no more than 10k miles on a built 8, minus internals). The car isn't fast and won't be. So, keep it looking nice, max the suspension and brakes and add the following mod for maximum hp gains.

Purchase a)wrx and build to stage 5 at 6-7 grand
b)sti with turboback exhaust and ecutek management
c)evo 8 and what ever combo makes 300whp

My 8 240 hp - Bling cruiser
My wrx st5 390 whp - pavement molester

The potential just isn't there and I don't wanna do the clean up on a taxed rotary that's slow despite throwing a lotta cash.

Feel free to flame but don't take it personal I just realized that for me it just isn't gonna happen.

We now return you to the previously in progress intelligent discussion.

Spending 1000's wisely will get you good performance. Look at Charles.

I know you'll get more than stock usually. I guess where I'm at is, the power comparison is just night and day with regards to dollar / hr gains. NA imports are a tough breed to be in most comparisons of FI vs NA. It can be done but the efficiency of the money spent and yields of hp are just not enough.

5k spent on a wrx with base of 227 at crank will definitely see at deep 350 crank #'s
5k spent on an 8 with a base of 240 won't even be close. I guess you could spray but I don't consider n20 a good solution to offset the poor base hp since sometimes the tank is full and visa versa. Engine to engine hands down any FI oem will most likely trounce the 1.3 rotary. It's a pretty car, the 8, but if an evo/wrx/stang etc... wanna square off at the stop light it would be a good idea to get some limo tint. When they rev at you at least you act like you're too mature as they can't look in to see the humbling process, lol.
the 8's a good car overall but it is what it is........show no go, but is does have the potential cult like history like the 7 does as well as: s2k, 300z,vr4,supra.......which is pretty cool

This whole debate has been had at least 100 other times and I'm sure no one wants to read it and I don't feel like typing it. Back to the point of this thread....if there is one anymore.

I think I was able to decipher your broken english above: 14 Errors in the text

Do not focus on exhaust or intakes....since those gains are basically zilch....and they are expensive.

Do focus on they Flywheel...(I have racing beat's installed) and SR Underdrive Pulley Kit....These are gains that are real reducing weight on the engine's crank, reducing rotational mass, and reducing parastic drag.

Read this, starting at ~1/2 way down the web page:

SR power pulley page:
