He means the actual pipe that goes to the throttle body. Basically the computer knows how big it is, and depending on the voltage that it gets, calculates how much air is flowing.

If you change the diameter, and make it bigger, then the computer is going to think less air is flowing through. The computer won't know what size it is, only what the software tells it it is. Make it bigger, and you will run lean.

I have finally gotten around to picking up a K&N cone type filter and try to make it work. I bought a rather large filter that doesnt fit the same way the old one did but it actually fits inside the intake, tight fit and the end is a little smashed but not much. I sealed the around the edges with some silicone to fill in all gaps. Ill get some pictures up later. I havent actually put it in yet but i will a little later today.

Let me know how this works, Mike. I'm really interested. And where did you get K&N cone from and what are the dimesions?

Go to the k&n site and look up part number RU4600. Its wont fit like the old one (sandwiched between the box and the tube), its actually wedged in the carbon fiber box itself. Its a very tight fit but with a littlework you can make it fit. It has to be the rubber filter because you will need the flexability to get it in place.

i have the k&n typhoon2 w/ rb duct. would your comment on software recalibration mean that my intake would defenitely perform better if paired w/ the rb race flash?
i always felt as if i lost some low end power w/ the k&n but it defenitely feels better on the upper end.

he is saying that the MAF in the Rx8 is calibrated for a 3inch pipe. If you change the size of the pipe you'd mess that up, and the PCM could be thinking it needs to add more or less fuel depending on if the size went up or down.

alright... now we're getting somewhere
so why is it that all aftermarket intakes other than racing beat have overlooked this tiny little detail?
i believe my k&n typhoon 2 uses the same diameter piping but has the filter element sit much farther back (closer to MAF) than stock filter... what would their logic have been?
& why would mazdaspeed team w/ AEM to fabricate a long cold air tube?
i mean are we all just being suckered into false claims?
