Let me address two items.
Yes the DIY was written by our good mate "Gomez" from down under where they use right hand drive.
The best way to get those wire clips off is with a right angle needle nose.
My way of removing the console lid is to "yank" it by the boot.
It may take a little ***** but if you give it a good yank upwards it will not break the clip. Not usually anyway, but the odds are better then prying on it.
Gomez himself doesn't like the yanking, in fact he thinks I'm a "Yank".

if you're worried about yanking off the cover you can reach in from the ebrake opening to push the holding clip to the side. Even if you break the clip you wont notice it when you put everything back together

To be honest, im not as impressed as everyone else. My shifting does feel a little shorter but my shifter is making a noise every time I shift gears. Im gonna wait and see if this goes away but so far im not very satisfied.

It is suppose to make a noise. It's a rifle bolt click.
That is normal.
There are hundreds of us here in So Calf. Tell us wher eyou live and come to a meet. We will tell you if it is not correct.
I personally had the same problem as you. But I was a smart buyer. I drove Richard' s car and tested it myself. I did not like it.
I waited. Then finally bought one knowing what to expect.
After a short period, you get use to it. In fact love it. Why?
Cause it's rifle bolt sure. You know it is in gear and will not slip out.
When you modify a car there are some sacrifices.
Same problem with an intake. You want it to be perfect and no noise. That is not going to happen.
You just have to accept facts.
There are plenty of So. Calf. members that will take that shifter if you do not like it.

Actually, the noise only happens when I shift. I understand the shifter being solid and that it is going to transmit noise. That doesnt bother me. What does bother me is that every time I shift gears, especially from 1st to 2nd, I hear a "whirling" noise that sounds like you just downshifted and released the clutch without giving the car any gas (like the rpms are being forced to climb). This noise only lasts for a split second as im entering the next gear.
I going to re-install it today to see if this fixes it. I also want to make sure that both rubber boots are secured in place.
Next meet I make it to I will try and compare this with someone else who has the same shifter. I was planning on going to the Irvine/Tustin meet yesterday but I got caught up with some work my bike needed.

I made a video that shows the noise. You may have to turn up your audio all the way but you can clearly hear the noise. First one is around 7 seconds and second is around 11 seconds.

Just had laythor help me install this last week, really its the best mod I have put on my 8 so far, I have exhaust, suspension, and rims. So far this is the cheapest and best mod. Not to mention its so easy to install, a bunch of drunk and stoned guys can do it. Great product Richard Paul! and thanks for the help Matt!
Thanks to some blue moon! I got you to do most of the work. btw you left your screwdriver in my car lol, I can bring it to a meet or something if you want it back

I have never heard this noise before.
You are the chosen one.
It will be interesting to have another user hear it.
If not you are in SoCal maybe you want to bring it by.

I installed my new shifter today--after almost a week of procrastinating--I took me around 40 minutes because I was being extra careful and didn't want to soil the seats with the tools.
Once the oem shifter was out, the AFE shifter just drops right in place. Very easy to install.
I went immediately for a drive with the new shifter with the stereo off to see if I could hear some of the noises some people described associated with this shifter. So far I cannot hear anything abnormal, in fact, it sounds the same as with the oem shifter.
The oem shifter was good but it felt somehow flimsy when shifting hard through the gears. With the AFE shifter, shifts are not only quicker but also very precise and mechanical... You can feel a more solid connection with the
Gearbox.
In conclusion, I'm satisfied with the product.

Blazed, that noise is not normal and should not be the result of the shifter. I had mine for years and never had a sound like that... cant say what that sound is though. Definitely get someone else to look at it or try taking it out and putting it back in.
I'm moving on from the 8 so I'm selling a few things that locals wanted. Today was the first thing I've sold and it was the AFE. The stock shifter wasn't as bad as I remembered, but I definitely miss the precision and shortness of the AFE shifter. Was definitely one of the best things I purchased for the 8.

So I removed and re-installed the shifter but that didnt help. The noise is still there. Im going to try and put the stock shifter back in and see if it still makes this noise. Im pretty sure that this noise wasnt here before so I will see if it goes away with the stock shifter.
If nothing works I will try to bring the car to you Richard but hopefully it doesnt come to that because you're 75 miles away from me.

Damn. I was hoping it was an install issue.
I have had the SS for a week (purchased through Hymee here in Oz)
I have the exact same noise as Blazed. Noise is more pronounced changing 1st to 2nd gear - less noise 2nd to 3rd gear - and hardly noticeable 3rd to 4th. For me the noise was definitely not there with OEM shifter so I am sure it is related in some way to the SS.
I use Redline MT90 in the gearbox and it is now due to be changed out for fresh. I will have that done early next week to see if that makes a difference.
