Best Intake System?
Hey guys, Im looking to purchase an intake system for my RX-8 but Im not certain as to what the best available system is for under $400 or so. Im not looking to go crazy with my money so turbos are out of the question. I've read about the K&N Typhoon intake system and it seems that a lot of people like it, yet some dont. Is there a better intake available for under $400 or so, and more importantly, do these intakes void the car's warranty? I keep getting told by friends that they do, but being that Im new to aftermarket performance, I really wouldnt know. Thanks alot.

I've just installed the HKS Racing Suction intake on my 8 and highly vouch for its quality of construction and sound.
It's a pretty comprehensive kit which comes with a heat shield designed to form a semi enclosed box.
A bit pricey though.

the intake replacements are not going to net you much more than 4 hp max.
so the reason people get a new intake is because they want more sound coming from their car.
The K&N has caused idle issues, loss of power, and the oil used on the filter gets on the sensors causing other problems.
So when you say some people love it, others hate it, well, to be frank, those who love it do so only because they like the louder car, and think it makes the car go faster.
We're all guilty of this to some degree, but an aftermarket catback is a better way to get more sound from your car, and having it flow better for down the road with your mods.
The only air filter replacement that I can recommend is the green filter. It's better flowing than stock, washable, and runs about $65. It's a drop in replacement for the OEM filter in your air box.

It feels as there may be a loss down low in the rev range and the car doesn't feel as eager to rev.
Above 6k though, it certainly feels more free and butt dyno is registering a performance gain.
Some believe the butt dyno is confused by the ear though.

Racing Beat is coming out with their intake (hopefully soon). I woulf get the K&N stock intake unit (rectangular fiter) before I got their Typhoon unit. I actually got the Rotary Extreme intake this past week. I have heard some good reports on it, and it doesn't cause the idle issues. A few hp for a few hundred $, and a little bit better sound is cool for me. If I don't like it I will just get the RB later on.
