Ja, you got that right. An aftermarket coil continues the pull in that range.

You better get that BHR kit off the engine before you commit the car to a new engine or the dealership WILL give you a hard time about it. You may not even get your kit back from them. Not only that, they are going to rip the coil wires off the coils and ruin them in the process.

Well guys, I will be getting a new engine too. I talked to the shop this afternoon and they said they put the new starter in, but also said the engine failed the compression tests. So I'm picking it up tomorrow and waiting for the engine to arrive in a few days.
So Charles, you definitely think we should rip the BHR coils out of there? I was planning to just tell them not to remove the wires from the coil terminals when they took everything out... but who knows if they'll follow my instructions.

fannin & Olorin, if you're lucky, you'll get the BHR coils and wires back in semi-usable condition, but they will install new stock coils and wires and charge you an ungodly amount of money for it. They will say that is the only way Mazda allows them to replace your engine.

so if you screwed the pooch with a wires, are they going completely dead or just getting a high resistance connection and losing some of the voltage?
ie will an inductive ignition timing light pick up a potential problem or when I pull my snow tires off should i pull the plugs and inspect them for something strange?

r0tor: an inductive timing light will help you troubleshoot, it's what I used to find a broken wire.
if the light doesn't fire...something's wrong. (most likely a wire)

in my experience, a broken wire = no flashing at all from timing light.
