BHR ignition upgrade

My OE coils and wires crapped out yet again. Is it worth it to upgrade to the BHR equipment this time?

The long answer is do some research. BHR makes a good product. Claims of early kits blowing motors and such are around. Charles is a great guy and stands behind his product. How true those claims are is a matter of debate.

Newer coils from Mazda (Type C if I recall correctly) work just fine and seem to fix earlier issues. (had mine for around 10K with no issues.)

AEM coils are another option. If you go that route need to make adaptor kit to fit them or buy pre built ones from Sake Bomb. AEM are well proven on track and dyno's. Downside is expensive.

Prices around 500 or so for BHR, 750 for AEM, and 3 to 400 for OEM if memory serves.

I have the older BHR kit with the D585 style coils. I bought it on the expectation that these coils would last a lifetime, and that by buying the kit I was eliminating an expensive point of potential failure.

That didn't work out. So far, I have had to replace two of the BHR coils. I would not buy any D585 based kit again, because in my experience these coils can still fail and because it's a hassle to swap the coils out w/o removing the entire bracket.

The newest BHR kit uses coils that fit into the OEM mounting location and require no bracket or harness. Should something fail, you can still swap failed units and you can use any OEM wire set that you want.

That's probably what I'd do, were I buying a kit again today.

I have had the BHR kit for about two years.

A little fiddly to fit, but not too bad.

They are still going strong - no complaints.

Charles is great with his service and i have always found him responsive. Suggest you contact him if you have any questions/concerns.

I have over 100K miles on my (older style) BHR kit... still works well. No idea how long will it last, but so far so good.

Have you made a decision?
I have an old style BHR kit with wires.
23k miles on it.
I only took it off to install the SakeBomb IGN-1A kit.
PM me if you want to make an offer.

I use and recommend the Mazda 'C' coils.

BHR does have a newer kit which has coils specifically designed around the factory dwell tables in the ECM. The D585 coils require a longer dwell compared to Mazda OE coils to make the strongest spark, which requires an ECM re-tune to take full advantage of them.

I bought a kit off of eBay for C$299 --> $225 (same kit on Amazon for $279) It uses D585 coils, but they are not AC Delco so not sure how long they will last, go them because breaking the parts prices down, $85 for bracket, $70 for 10mm wires, $30 for adapter connectors they were $40 extra for the coils ($10 each) so when they fail I will replace with AC Delco ones. BTW, it comes with 2 year warranty.

Well they’re not D585, but supposedly replicated. Not everything from overseas is bad, but there are companies now making stuff with fancy colors and flashy labels that put crap internals in the same appearance profile. I thought this was one of those companies, but am not sure.

These are from a Canadian company Napol, which by the name sounds like a Chinese company off of Canada...

Actually Japan, but they’d likely cost twice that if made there.

This was a cheapie ebay special that had only done 500km on trailing 1 plug while waiting for my new style BHR coils to arrive. Although the coils did run the car and it was driveable, obviously poor quality. I got a useless repacement set of coils, then a full refund. Seller was good about this but as everyone says, dont waste your time or money on the cheap stuff. These came with a 2 year warranty. They only lasted 2 weeks! No point bashing the company that sells these. I would love to see a worse looking coil if you have one.
The difference is night and day between cheap and BHR , but as as my engine is on its last legs i dont mind experimenting. I expect to bolt the BHR coils onto a fresh engine in the near future. These coils are awesome and worth the left nut they cost me to import to Australia.
I intend to keep this dead coil in the glovebox in attempt to ward off evil spirits that have been known to follow Rx8s!

In an engine where bad misfiring can do damage to combustion chamber seals, I am amazed people still chase cheap alternatives for coils. You get what you pay for.

Well that’d be a perfect reason to have IGN-1A coils, but everyone balks at the cost.

However I do admit that the latest BHR coil is a bit of an interesting mystery in what the actual internals are. They could be a repackaged coil that is commonly known/used or unique in some way. While I used a homemade D585 setup with good success and am believer in the IGN-1A power and reliability, the latter are a bit bulky and heavy from a racer perspective. I’d rather have a lighter, smaller coil, but sometimes that trade-off is hard to overcome without advanced technology.

You better get geared up, but unfortunately this won’t offer much pitchfork protection

There are still people flaming around these parts of the intersweb?

I know I posted a set but I had my reasons, I paid a decent price (coil cost was $10 each coil) and I will replace with OEM D585 when it starts giving me problems. I believe the ones mentioned are a bit pricey...even if intentions are to replace with OEM.

He’s talking about the new OE replacement coils. Unless you live in Great Britain/UK it probably more cost effective to buy the equivalent BHR OE replacement coils instead:

$10 coils are a waste of $40 imo.
Most reputable ones I've seen are at least
$35 each.

It is, but I got a "kit" so I consider them kinda like the starter toner cartridge when you buy a new printer... LOL

why would you want to import an ignition kit from the UK; does that make any sense?

No, not really ...

I just installed the BHR coils this weekend and it was a fairly easy process. So far, I'm happy with the results, I like to think it runs faster/smoother.
