With my GReddy SE and BHR pipe I've been noticing a rattle/buzzing noise when my revs drop and occassionally when i'm cruising. Has anyone else had this issue or know how to resolve it?

Any specific reason? I thought we had discussed it when I ordered my pipe as I had the cat put on and I recall hearing it should be fine... am I going to be blowing this cat out?

TheWulf 03-04-2011 01:36 PM

Yes I recall you mentioning that about F/I, sadly that's not my case (yet!)

I did see the Davesport site, which is why I was wondering if there was another reason it would fail on the 8.

In either case I'll be putting it through a few track days this year so we'll see how it stands up!

Make sure the gaskets are installed properly, the hardware is torqued evenly, and that there is no interference between the hanger rod and the PPF. If you still have concerns after that, contact me.

I had that problem for months. I tried putting rubber hoses on the metal bar that hooks to the stock rubber hanger and it still rattled cause the hose would always fall off. I finally switched to a different rubber hanger. Now the metal bar is pressed against the frame rail so it never bounces.

shifty 03-05-2011 03:37 AM

what hangers did you use I was looking at the ones from raceroots to stiffen it all up and reduce movement.

RX-865 03-08-2011 04:51 PM

Yeah I was wondering which hangers you used as well

jayscoobs 03-08-2011 05:47 PM

Quick question, I didnt want to go through this whole thread looking for a simple answer, but since this midpipe attaches to the stock catback, does this mean that its not full 3"? Does it just taper at the flanges? Thanks.

I am guessing that light racing, such as autocrossing, will not harm the cat as long as one has a decent tune on the car but that is just a guess.

I hope Charles doesn't mind me contributing to this thread, given that I do not have a BHR mid-pipe, but I do have a custom mid-pipe that uses the Davesport cat. While I wasn't the first RX-8 club member to use this cat, I was, perhaps, the second or third (that I am aware of).

I've got two years of aggressive autocrossing on my mid-pipe, including dual-driver, national level competition, on a car tuned with a Cobb AP (no turbo though). I recently removed the mid-pipe for a visual inspection, and could see no degradation to the core.

I'm a happy camper with respect to my Davesport cat. :)

^Cool story! Was it Ken Hill? Good taste one the premium Tequila, BTW.

One comment on vibration at idle - my setup did this as well, and it was the pipe rattling against the chassis near the rear hanger. I attributed this mostly due to the larger diameter, but the lighter weight of the midpipe & catback (I use Corksport) also stretches the factory hanger less. This last go-around when I installed the midpipe, I cut the horizontal reinforcement out of the middle of the factory hanger to make it more stretchy and that seems to have done the trick.

RX-865 03-09-2011 03:09 PM

Yeah it's not a leak so it must be a hanger causing the rattle. It appeared to be coming from the rear of the pipe but I couldn't see it hitting anything. I put a bar between the pipe and the chassis and the rattle continued. It never occurred to me to look at the hanger

Thx for the contribution, George. Funny story; Easy and I were recently in Vegas to work on Phil's car and we stayed at the Planet Hollywood Hotel. While there we casino-hopped a bit and ended up at the Diablo Cantina, in the Monte Carlo. Easy and I started yapping with the bartenders about cars and what-not and a guy seated next to us, who was sipping some pretty $$$ tequila, joined the conversation. Turns out he drives a Miata (Spec-class, I think) and he said he knew a serious autox'er named George who drives an RX-8. I mentioned your last name and BINGO, we were sipping shots together and talked about cars for a while. :)

There are RX-8 owners everywhere, aren't there?

Did someone say Tequila? That was an interesting night.

Okay, so the Turbo XS catback is just as loud as the HKS Hi-power with the BHR pipe. The sound is different but I must say the tone is better for street use with the TurboXS.

The only problem is that the donut gasket for the BHR pipe is too small for the TurboXS and the Turbo XS donut gasket is too larger for the protruding section of pipe at the end of the BHR pipe. So with either one there is and exhaust leak.

The solution is to leave the donut gasket that came with the BHR pipe, fit the larger donut gasket in the end of the TurboXS catback and mate them together :) The inner diameter of the TurboXS donut is larger so there is no restriction. This was the only solution we could think of in my garage and it worked perfect :)

when will i be able to place a order for a midpipe?

Weird, with either one we could not get it to bolt up tight. What also weird is that the turboxs seems louder than the HKS did with the BHR. I am thinking of getting a resonator put in the long section of the Turbo XS. We'll see.

^ Throw a turbo in that system... that'll muffle it down for ya

Hi all, been searching through the forum and cant seem to find an answer. And this thread is huge, too big to read at work.

Basically I've had my bhr midpipe on for a few weeks now, and since fitting, I noticed it had a slight rattle. This seems to still be there and if anything slightly worse now its bedded in?

Is there any known problem/ fix? I've potentially heard it could be the cup and ball joint between the catback and midpipe? And maybe swap to the standard mazda springs?

It is really getting on my nerves and loud from outside the car..... :(

So any help greatly appreciated.....

Thanks in advance

Nick

I'm sure Charles would have helped if you PMd him. They were talking about hanger rattling like 10 posts ago.

shifty 03-22-2011 11:37 AM

Id be interested to hear what people have done as I spent the weekend under the car trying to stop the rattle I tried the oem springs but there to long I removed and reseated the joint and I changed the local hanger to a power flex one which doesnt fit on the midpipe as the arm is thinner then the stock arm so its loose.
Im not complaining about the pipe as im sure it is a simple fix once you know the problem.

pdxhak 03-22-2011 12:10 PM

Is the pipe banging on the support brace?

shifty 03-22-2011 12:20 PM

as far as I can see no but it also seems to happen once its got nice and hot after a short drive.

The car is going it for the clutch and BHR flywheel to be fitted monday so il ask them whilst its on the rack to tack a look.
