Boosted 6port/automatic

Boosted 6port/automatic
Some of you may know I've been preparing to boost my 6speed/6 port automatic. well. I've researched for about one year the good and the bad. I want at least 260 rwhp
GREDDY TURBO SETUP.. I planned to do this with an upgraded turbo of some sort. I believe it would be fairly easy to get 260 rwhp. Wouldnt be very expensive either. But... i decided not to. the reason is, the turbo manifold. Every single turbo kit I've seen for the rx8 has an inferior manifold design. Im not talking about build quality. Im talking about the design. The problem is, the rear rotor housing in the rx8 is in a tight spot to say the least. The exhaust port has hardly any headroom. Even in stock form, those stock headers are not adequate in letting that rear housing breathe. My question to the guys that has had rebuilds.... Which apex seals broke 1st?? the seals on the rear rotor? or the front rotor? In my research it was majority of the rear rotor.
For a good example, look at Racing Beats header design and look what they did with the rear rotor runner. Look at how it is angled.
So in my opinion and research with a couple guys that build rotaries all day, I've decided to leave turbo alone until I see an adequate turbo manifold that lightens the burden for the rear rotor housing.
PETTIT SUPERCHARGER SETUP
im looking at $6000 right off the bat. I plan to install this kit myself but I plan to upgrade my radiator, injectors. etc.. you get the idea though.
I should be able to actually get 270-285 rwhp with the 8lb pulley and header back exhaust (maybe more).
This is not a turbo vs supercharger debate. Because there is nothing wrong with turbo. Its just that the kits that are available for the rx8 need better turbo manifold designs in my opinion.
What do ya'll think?? I need to narrow this down so i can get more power in this machine!

well ive bit the bullet and I will go with the greddy setup.. in about a week i will order a garrett 3071r. after i recieve my greddy kit, i will have the new turbo fitted. I will be gettin new injectors in january. I hope to get about 315 whp. I plan to push about 12psi so we'll see.

I'm of the opinion that anyone turboing/supercharging the 8 should budget in a rebuild within the first year .
Hopefully get the tune and supporting mods pretty much sorted before you go kaboom
Then at rebuild time get upgraded apex seals and pin the motor

It wouldn't be difficult to do it, either, just find a 3.5" pipe the proper length, purchase a Denso style MAF flange, have it welded to the pipe, get some silicone transition couplers and you're done.

how ever much its going to cost me I will pay for. I forsee the $5500 range, maybe a little more

No one has tried it yet, but you could (In theory) replace the charge pipe that enters the throttle body with the MAF housing in the Esmeril kit with a 3.5" pipe and configure it with a blow-thru MAF. It will work like this, you MUST have screen before and after the MAF.

thats a very good idea.. I will ask tito at alamo rotary about that.

When you get her buttoned up come to a local mod day, we haven't met you yet. Personally I would go built motor and the Pettit but just because I am all turboed out. I also recommend addressing cooling (coolant and oil) if you want your motor to last any reasonable amount of time.

as far as the boost, Pettit is having a shortage of superchargers. :-(

on the turbo side of thing, I just ordered my resonated midpipe, guages, and AEM intake(will be modified for the turbo kit)
Im taking my car next week to get decarbed (only has 9,000 miles on the engine)
But I want to be sure that my intake is clean before the turbo install
Im also about to get a "backup" motor built so when[I I blow this motor ill just drop a new one in. I dont really want to say a whole lot of what Im doing Id rather just show when its done. I will try to break some Renesis records (at least for a/t rx8's) I will push 12psi until my other motor is done being built. Then I will ATTEMPT 18-20 psi. Something probably will break or blow, but I will attempt it... not as a daily driver, but just on the dyno.
but for the turbo gurus..
Im pretty sure the 3071r will be way out of its efficiency range, but it will push out 20psi... will it?
