as other people have said, just putting a harness in your car is dangerous.
if the car flips over, you'll be LOCKED in an upright position. guess whats going to try to stop the roof from crushing? your head. guess whats stronger than your head? metal. concrete. sunroof.
to put a harness in your car without a rollcage is incredibly stupid.

Would a harness across the waist be unsafe as well? Just having your stock seat belt maybe, with a harness bolted on either side so you keep snug? You are still able to lean to the passenger side and won't have your spine crushed.
Any thoughts?

I've been in a race rx7 for a few turns around MAM.
Firstly, there is no flex in the belts, there is no "auto-tightener" to adjust to what your wearing and how you're sitting. So you have two options 1) wear the belts loosely so you can reach around and have some comfort for daily drive 2) wear the belts correctly and be locked in position.
You are quite literally belted in the seat, there is no way to move to either side or to reach to the glovebox or anywhere without taking off the harness. You can't even reach something under your seat!!!
I mean, that is the point of a race harness, right? Making sure that when your pulling 1G in a corner you aren't flying all over the place trying to steer and give it throttle.
Just don't do it dude, I know Fast & furious makes it look cool, but its very uncomfortable to wear and just plain dangerous.

Yeah that's true...I drove my buddy's Accord and it has a harness and I couldn't really reach anything. I just think it looks cool, but maybe a bit too impractical and unsafe for my driving.

I have a bride seat with takatas and it's not that bad cause you do get use to it all. As far as feeling safe, the tighter you have it, the safer you FEEL, the more likely you are to do something dumb while driving in town. I keep mine somewhat loose but not loose enough to where i would hit the wheel in an accident. And yes it would suck in the event of a roll over.

yeah this is not a racecar if ur a DD so don't put the harnesses in unless u take it to the track then put them in for that or at least wear them for the track

Let's say I get Recaro racing seats...do they have something in them (like some sort of reinforcement) so that a roll cage is unnecessary? Will they prevent broken spines in a roll over?

The correct way to install this would be to buy a roll bar with a harness bar to mount your harness correctly (this is difficult in this car since we have the virtual B pillar since we have suicide doors.) buy aftermarket seats that place the harnesses at the correct height, disable all your airbags and wear a helmet everytime you drive.

here, theres the roll bar. That bar in the middle going across is where you mount the harnesses to.
Since its a bar and not a cage you can probably get away with not having to wear a helmet in the car.
