Hey SpeedRacer,

Do you still have your Typhoon uninstalled with the Stage I? Is Maurice still checking into it?

Yes, I went back to the stock air box for the time being but I'd like to reinstall the K&N.

The last that I heard was that a K&N intake was being shipped to Maurice and until he receives it he can't do much more than speculate on the possible issues. Hopefully there is an easy fix to this and I'm sure that Canzoomer or RX8friend will jump in when they have more info.

did I miss something? Are people having problems with the stage 1 and aftermarket intakes? or just Typhoon? Thanks

Canzoomer's comments on K&N intake

Comments from CanZoomer Stage I installed

What I have heard, now from 4 people, is that the K&N has produced consistent rough running.

How would turbulence have an effect on running?

An air cleaner/intake does not affect the electronics normally, so I am **speculating** it might be creating turbulence in the intake.
Turbulence increases air velocity. The MAF sensor reads air velocity.
Increased air speed would make it think that there is greater flow, and the ECU would respond by increasing the fuel injection duty cycle making the car run a richer mixture.

Anyway, pure speculation until we test with a wide band sensor.

I am told by one fellow who just bought a K&N that it is on the way here for us to test with.

Once I have some **facts** i will post them.

The reason I have requested people not use our Stage1 with it, at least until we can test this, is that we are concerned that a problem caused by the combination might be blamed on us.

Until we can see what is going on we would prefer to err on the side of caution.

Most likely I think would be simple turbulence.
If you get a vortex forming you will see some fairly big differences in air velocity.
It's a MAF, which is a flow sensor, and is easily affected by turbulence.

Could be a lip, could be the shape of the intake causing uneven flow, could be lots of things.

Only testing will tell.

Best way is to build a transparent copy of the intake tube and do a smoke test. This will show vortices and pressure spots, but is a difficult thing to do.

Just to recap:
*Some* people have reported rough running issues with the K&N Typhoon.
The only reason I can think of that this could happen is turbulence effectng the Mass Air Flow sensor.
A MAF measures air velocity. If there is turbulence then it could measure artifically high velocity.

This would result in the ECU providing too much fuel.

As our device uses the input from the MAF as welll, we worry that this could result in an incorrect mixture ( amount of fuel injected).

So, until we have one to test with...
I suggest waiting to find out!

If turbulence is a problem would some sort of air foil on the throttle body help? haven't seen the 8's throttle body yet so don't know for sure if it would work but it was just a thought.

I was thinking the same thing. With the stock setup you have two screens; one is placed in front of the MAF sensor and the other is behind it. It seems like the screens would help to stabilize the airflow around the sensor.

It would be interesting to see if adding similar screens to the K&N intake would help with the issue.

Something as simple as a 1" wide louver with 2 or 3 fins on it placed in the pipe right in front of the throttle body might do the trick. something like that wouldn't be to hard to rig up.

Today it is over 50 deg, sunny and mild here. Had a late-morning meeting in Arlington across the river from my D.C. office. Zoom zoom with the windows open! (Actually, HMMMMMMMMMMMMM if you remember the old Mazda rotary ads.)

Whoops -- somehow my reply in another thread got misdirected, probably from my hitting something accidentally before sending. Sorry.

I just ordered my Stage 2, high-flow CAT/MID pipe, and SP2 from CZ. The muffler shop down the street has a dyno. I'll keep you freaks updated......

I saw an infomercial about a year ago for a item that was inserted into the intake tube of any vehical that would spin with the air flow creating a smoother flow into the engine. I believe it was called the Tornado. It claimed better fuel economy, power and engine smoothness by smoothing out the air flow. Not sure it something of this nature would help the K&N situation.

Any dyno charts yet? Has anyone with CZ1 dynoed their 8 yet? It would be exciting to see the improvements on a chart.

Dyno jet data confirms 20-25whp gain, and I think the units are on back order so it might not ship soon but if you order they will ship it when they get to your order.

Can the stock clutch handle this new power?
i remember reading some where when you have a jump increase in horsepower you need a proformance clutch to "grab" the new power so do we need a new clutch?

howcome someone said on another thread the stage 1 was 40hp and the stage 2 has some other hp number..........so is that person wrong b/c the last posts were the dynos were 20-25hp,

oh man i just read and 27pages of post(skipped some long ones) so glad im done took me about 1hour to read 27pages,lol
