Unhappy Catalytic Convertor?!?!

I purchased my RX8 in Oct 2006, when it was almost 3yrs old. It's now got approx 48k on the milage. When it was 2wks old the clutch went on it!! Mazda repaired it as a good will gesture under the warranty. Then... yesterday I took my babe for it's first MOT and guess what... it failed!!!!!!! Due to the 'Cat'.
It is still with Mazda as I type and I'm waiting for a phone call... however, it seems like it's not going to be covered under my extended warranty.
Has anyone else had this problem so soon?

I'm convinced I've been sold a 'DUD' and really upset about it all - really feel this car must be unlucky for me and thinking of selling it now before anything else goes wrong!!

All comments would be greatly appreciated.

I have less than 30k miles & 2 1/2 years on my car and I have had 3 Cat replacements. Cats are covered under the 100k emissions warranty. I haven't had a problem in the last 15k miles.
You bought your car used and therefor you bought whatever abuse the previous owner put on the car. Maybe the previous owner knew the clutch was going bad and didn't want to pay for a replacement. This problem shouldn't blamed on the car or Mazda.

Yeah, I would wait until that phone call before jumping to a conclusion. They may very well be working on your car now replacing the cat under warranty.

I understand the cat. going bad seems odd, but the clutch probably has nothing to do with the car, and everything to do with the guy you bought it from. There are a lot of car companies who would have refused that as a customer consumed item.

Cel?......

Did your car have a check engine light on? There is no way it should fail an emissions check if the CEL isn't lit, or a code isn't stored in memory.

Did it fail because the cat is physically not there/previous owner took it off?

You may be screwed at 48,000 (kilometers?) the 100,000 warranty is for the US, and it sounds like you are in the UK......

Is there anyway to bypass teh catalytic converter. You know like completely take it off and have some kind of relay or something that the os2 sensor can plug into. My catalytic converter has failed and i am on my sendon os2 sensor. Please help

Though you should make your own thread or search, a Cobb AP ($700) is pretty much the only thing that can make the CEL not show up. You will need to get a pipe to replace the catalytic converter also ($300ish).

without a cat your emissions test is still going to fail....1 for not being there visual 2 because it's not there to help reduce the HydroCarbons and CarbonMonoxide out of the tail pipe...you must have one for passing an emission test.....to get rid of the CEL as far as I know is AP, bulb removal or electrical tape...that's about it....

Government issued emissions warranty. Get back there and tell their asses that ALL emissions devices are covered for 8 years/80,000 miles. Unless you don't live in the U.S.

She is in the UK. I don't know if they have a warranty beyond the standard Mazda one.
