Cold Weather and the Oiled Gauze Air Filter

I've done a bit of reading regarding the air filtration for the engine.

It's widely accepted that the oiled sponge and oiled gauze filters are the choices for performance filtration. I'm certain they are great for fair weather performance applications, but my suspicion is directed toward these filters in cold weather.

Anyone familiar with high school chemistry knows that oil has a higher solidification temperature than water. I have yet seen no data on cold weather performance of these types of filters both in terms of air and filtration ability. For one thing, if the oil has solidified, it would likely be more of an obstruction and would definitely lose its adhesive ability.

Any thoughts on this? I've written to K&N and Green Filter for comment or test data, but they have not replied yet.

I'm currently eyeing the late nanofiber technology EaA air filters patented and released by Amsoil. They seem like a sound choice for efficient air filtration in all weather. Anyone have experience with these products?

Anyone familiar with high school chemisty will know that each oil freezing point is different

But by your logic, I would be more worried about the oil in my oil pan freezing before my air filter oil

The reasons you have not found any data on this is because probably nobody has done any testing on this. This all depends on the oil type used. I do know AEM new Dry flow filter requires no oil. You may be interested in this filter. I do not know the detales on how it compares to the standard OIL filter but here ya go..

DRYFLOW Air Filters

A revolutionary lifetime air filter media that delivers industry-leading filtration and will not affect your warranty.

Element is cleanable and is guaranteed for the life of your vehicle
DRYFLOW air filter will NOT void your vehicle’s warranty
Delivers 99.4% cumulative filtration efficiency, based on independent SAE J276 JUN93 Fine Dust Air Cleaner Test Code procedures

Hope this helps. I have the AEM CAI on my 8 and I love it. No problems. I have taken the system off a fue times and found no dirty tube walls or anything like that. My Throddle Body is still very clean.. So one can assume the filter is doing its job.
