What are you looking for in an intake -- noise, performance, etc...?

you're not going to gain much from intake then... but at least it's going to be more than exhaust. :P Maybe 0-5hp?

The thing about upgrading anything on the RX is that no single mod is going to show dramatic improvements over stock. However, if you design a complete package at the onset, you'll see gradual improvements over time which will add up to one great setup in the end. For example, most of us change the exhaust system first for two reasons. First, a more aggressive sound is sought and, second, it does no good to try for higher intake flow if the exhaust flow cannot accomodate the intake. Many of us who have installed the mid-pipe/cat replacement will tell you that is the place where most gains can be made with bolt-on parts. A lot of people with the mid-pipe still have the stock airbox on and are quite happy. I have pretty much changed everything that has a replacement part available but I have a particular endgame in mind. If you prefer road racing, then your choices will gravitate to a certain set of parts and the same is true for other types of racing. On intakes, specifically, I am happy with my RE and I still have a couple hundred dollars left. I love SR's stuff but that intake is a ton o' dough.

The SR intake isn't that badly priced. Now the AutoExe "Ram air" intake is expensive. Even the Revolution or Super Autobacs intakes aren't too cheap. I imagine that the upcoming FEED intake won't be cheap either. The HKS intake is nice, but pricey... like $600-700. Basically outside of a drop-in filter replacement, I bet that all JDM intakes are more expensive than the SR intake.

How expensive is it now?

It is my understanding that the SR intake is around $450 as opposed to the RE at $260, or so.

They've been discussed a long time ago. The AutoExe one is one of the first on the market. As for the others... the FEED intake isn't on the market yet but has been mentioned by a few people. The Super Autobacs/ Revolution intake has been posted by myself. The HKS Racing Suction intake has one or two threads about one... one I started and someone else started another on it. The JDM intakes from from around $500 to $1000.

Charles, as someone who cares about sound... here's an important question. Is the SR intake much more quiet than the RE intake? Does it have the same issue (?) that RE does with some variance between cars (Chuck has talked about this)?

My father's '90 project Mustang intake has been modified so that the "tube" that ran into the wheel arch has been cut off to improve air flow, but keeping the stock box to keep out heat. The thing is loud as hell, particularly from the passenger's seat. There is no way in hell I want anything that loud on a $30k daily driver.

If that's your main criteria then I wouldn't bother with any intake for a number of reasons's noted above. If you think you will get a percievable performance gain from this type of MOD you're just throwing your money away.

My question about the SR intake is has it been designed with the VFAD in mind? I think that there is something to be gained on the intake. Apparantly Mazda did as the MS RX-8 has a modified VFAD and a free flow filter. So maybe the question is how much gain is there REALLY and how much is this gain worth paying for?

I had the SR for awhile, but sold it because I needed the money - I must be crazy!

Here is the thread:

SR told me it added 8-9 HP, but I have no way to confirm it. Try contacting Lacroft3 later next week. He bought it from me.

confused a lot aye? you should just get a drop in filter. It's been covered over and over that the stock intake system is pretty well designed and there really isn't any reason to replace it, don't waste your $ if your decision is just based on performance b/c all intakes are like the exhausts out there you buy it for the sound not really the performance.

The thing with aftermarket intakes is that their benefits are directly proportional to the time an individual spends in the rpm range where they become effective. They are also limited by one's tolerance for noise in the cabin. There's the rub. I would enjoy letting each of you take my particular car for a drive and see if the balance of all the stuff I have added, so far, is worth the extra noise I have acquired. I tend to enjoy pushing the envelope a bit so, for me, it is all worth it. I notice when I put the stock box back on the car didn't seem to have as much torque from 2K on up and it also loses h.p. above 8K. All I can say is that I am quite happy with what I have done.
