Cooling mod alternative?

I didn't read the thread but it appears Mazsport has some issues going on I guess , In any case, how hard would it be to duplicate their cooling kit? Does the Cobb have some settings for the fans etc.? The nice thing about the Mazsport kit is it was fairly inexpensive and easy to install from what I could tell, and it seemed to work pretty well. Am I better off just saving up for a Cobb or is it just a matter of rigging up some relays to the fans manually etc.? I was just wondering as I'm starting to pursue cooling mods now that the car is running better, and aside from replacing radiators in previous vehicles I've never really messed with much of anything else cooling wise.

You can put in your own switch to control the fans.

You can buy an aftermarket front bumper with bigger opening.

You can change the radiator mix and or type of fluid.

Many things you can do, like a search.

An AP tuner can set the fans to come on at a lower temp for you (assuming you have an AP). You could look for used mazsport kits in the for sale threads. I'm not sure if Hymee's software will do this when it comes out, but I imagine it would.

What if searching doesn't work? I've already done those things:

Mazdaspeed front bumper has a HUGE front opening.

I've messed around with radiator fluids to an extent, but that doesn't get you anything noticable anyway.

Was just a simple question, no need to get all elitist on me.

I plan on changing radiators and adding an extra tranny cooler down the road, but a radiator is 4-500 bucks at least, tranny cooler is cheaper but extremely time consuming, and nobody makes a simple bolt on yet. So I was just looking for something easy and cheap ala the Mazsport (rip?) deal. In any case, just thinking out loud, got some ideas now, thanks.

Just get the BHR radiator and be done with it.

+1 on a bigger radiator.

Also, you obviously haven't messed around enough then. We run distilled water and Redline water wetter in our cars and our track temp are around 180F. Granted we also run Ron Davis radiators and modify the water pump a little but still 180F at 7-9k rpm at race speed for 3 hrs...that is amazing!

Yeah man, really BHR's radiator is a good buy from what I hear...and you can never go wrong with a straight water/water wetter setup, as long you don't forget change it out for anti freeze in the winter.

Do you have an example of this? I bet someone will copy mazsport soon enough.

Some of these elements have been covered here but I'll try and recap them as well as offering my own.

Cooling has been a big focus of mine living in Phoenix AZ. My RX8 is my daily driver so I need to be able to operate my car in high heat w/ my AC on so I don't BBQ inside my cabin.

The BHR radiator would be a vast improvement to your cooling system. This would ensure that your cooling system is able to stay under control. Running good coolant also is important. I've been using straight distilled w/ 2 bottles of water wetter.

The other part is the water pump. Look into the mazmart water pump upgrade. Its vastly superiour to the stock pump. This combo will ensure you have great coolant flow and quick cooling ability.

Other stuff would be silicone radiator hoses to ensure your hoses can withstand the high coolant heat.

Keeping your rotary cool will ensure it will see 100,000+ miles.

As for the Mazsport fan switch, you can make your own with $10 worth of materials and a switch.

While we are tossing out options, could also go with different pulley and the racing beat flash that turns fans on earlier

Actually, it was the other way around.

That said, what Flashwing pointed out is true - you can just wire a switch with two diodes to the fan relays and be done with it.
The AccessPORT does allow you to change the on points for the two fans independently.

Thanks man, that's really helpful. I live in Austin which is a different kind of heat, here we don't quite have the humidity of say, Houston for example, but it's not dry either, and my poor little car just cooks like an oven and suffocates during the summer as it is a bizarre, damp, stifling kind of heat. I'm trying to braindump some ideas on what I can do to help it out before it gets hot here again so that's what got me started on this thread and the Mazsport mod etc. I'll look into your suggestions for sure, if I have any $ leftover after Christmas I'm hoping to deploy some of these ideas.

+1 on the BHR cooling system. I've been looking at it since I plan on heading to the track often over the summer.

How will it effect the engine during the cold NE winters, if at all?

i'm going to say the BHR radiator is not going to help much if your fans don't fully kick on until the 200+ deg F setpoint thats in the factory PCM...

it wont make you run cooler, but it makes it harder for the car to overheat.

if your stuck in bumper to bumper traffic, then there is no air moving past you radiator. If there is no air moving through the radiator, it can not transfer the heat out of the coolant. The coolant becomes warmant until the radiator fans kick in - thus moving air past the radiator and tranfserring heat out.

If bumper to bumper traffic you can have the largest radiator known to man and your car will still run hot if the fan setpoints are too high.... like they are with the second fan coming on at over 200 deg F

right, but the BHR rad also is bigger than stock, there for theres more surface area to disperse the heat, so you will need the fans in bumper to bumper traffic, im just saying they wont come on as quick

MM, do you have any pics of the plumbing? How did you tap into the existing coolant hoses? Thanks.
