Custom axle-back help
So i jut got an 04 RX-8 with GT package yesterday morning and am wanting a little more quality sound out of her but cannot afford a $500 dollar exhaust. I am currently trying to sell all of my aftermaket stuff off of my 07 Si to get enoug for a CAI. But until then i want to be able to hear the exhaust. Im thinking about having a custom axle back done with a qulity 1 in 2 out design muffler(ex:cherry bomb) but am unsure about what muffler to actually get. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

i've been tossing this idea around as well. i've looked at many of the catbacks for sale and it seems as though they are not much more than a couple coffee can mufflers with a splitter and some tips. i think this is something that could be done for under 200 dollars. im just worried about how ricy / raspy it might sound.

you're not going to find anything remotely in your price range that will not sound like total **** on a rotary engine. for anything tolerable you're going to have to fork up for an aftermarket catback, or fork up for a properly thought out custom setup.
go ahead and buy a couple of coffe cans and do it the junkyard way. I'll warn you though when you come back here with reports of how bad it is, or how unhappy you are - you'll get stfunewb'd and told you should have read/searched first. you arent the first one's to have this idea, and theres a reason that the known branded catbacks are what sells. 1) convinience, the driving force of our culture 2) cost, 99% of ppl cant "make" anything of comparable quality for even close to the same cost

I'll partial quote something i just posted elsewhere...
1,000 degrees Celcius. thats the kind of consistent thermal abuse anything you put in the exhaust stream should be able to handle.
as far as sound, noone can define that in any tangible way. but 99%+ of ppl here say the same. if you search you may be able to find old links to sound clips of ppl who have tried this sort of thing in the past. check youtube etc as well. even then, remember that without a proper full range microphone recording, and speakers playing - that you're not hearing the full spectrum of what any particular thing will sound like
.....
i get temp readings from the cat section of the pipe(secondary O2 sensor)............
i regularly see cruising temps of 940 CELCIUS, and i've seen it get very close to 1,000C under harsh conditions. the OE cat wont take that. In fact the ONLY cat anyone has found(and mentioned) that will handle that kind of repeated heat is made by HJS, and sells for $1,000-1,500 depending on the current exchange rate.

Damn... i knew it was hot but not that hot. Is that why some peoples cats are falling apart and rattling in the stock muffler?

sorry man, but your only real options are:
1) listen to what ppl here say and go off that.
2) try to judge as best as possible off sound clips and go off that
3) try what you will and find out for yourself

OBX, $300 shipped if you want a decent catback on the cheap. Read the reviews. Or do like I did and just get a mid pipe and aftermarket tips welded on. Car sounds good, makes power (catbacks don't) and in looking at my exhaust I have pretty Magnaflow tips
Plus I love the smell of fuel in the morning

^^ not a bad idea. i have the MS catback and gutted OE cat-pipe for the moment. the catback does nothing for ya. cat removal doesnt do a whole awful lot(power wise), helps if you tune adjusts for it, but not much.

Yeah, when I say power I mean 5-10HP at best on the butt dyno. I'm almost done with my reliability mods so tuning VIA the AP is my next step. But, a stock 8 or an 8 with a catback and intake is no match for me. Chalk it up to the midpipe, BHR kit, and my awesome driving skills
But honestly I just maintain my car very well and I think that is the most important thing, just to make sure she is running up to her potential.

Would this be an ok muffler? Or would it be extremely loud like the turbo xs?

who knows? i imagine it'd be hard to find specs on their "aluminized steel" to be able to say anything about its quality, far as sound.... find a clip and judge as you can, or buy it and try...

I am debating glass packs at the moment. I have heard old school rotaries running them back in the day and it sounds great. But i have read that they melt but I have never seen evidence of that.
