On the screen issue-

maybe the stainless steel mesh filter is essentially doing what the screens were doing when they were in place. screens are screens, no?

Looks great. Just FYI, I read a review some time ago on air filters and it was found that the metal filters such as Blitz have the worst filtering capability. A K&N actually was found to filter more effectively. But, that was just one study, I don't even remember who conducted it.

I have started this mod and am working on it whenever time permits. I removed the vfad two days ago and it made a huge difference on the intake tone. The car drove fine. Day 2 I took apart the intake box, removed the dividers (I dont know what the hell those are for) and removed the two screens. When i drove to work today my car had a very sporadic idle. Changing three or four times at every red light. The car also seem to bog down when starting from a standstill but drove fine past first gear. I talked to a coworker here who use to race rx-7s and he said that the screens are to diffuse the air so a constant rate hits the maf sensor. Im going to go home and put the screens back in a flash the system to see if that helps. Any input? Hopefully my cone filter I ordered will fix this problem.

Since my last post on this thread I discovered that the greatest detriment to the idle/metering quality comes from removing the radius horn/velocity stack from the factory box. The panels on the inside are noise-cancelling panels and the screens attempt to ensure even airflow across the MAF sensor, but removing them doesn't necessarily alter the idle/metering quality. With my R.E. "intake" system I have fashioned my own radius horn with the Blitz SUS filter and now use that box for appearances or serious racing only with no idle/metering issues. 99% of the time I have the modded factory box in place. This fall I will do A/B comparisons to see what's up.

All I really did was replicate the function of the horn by necking down the Blitz's 4" flange to 3-3.5" with a silicone adapter and make sure that there were no harsh edges of the intake pipe exposed so the airflow has smooth surfaces to deal with. The problem is that the 90 degree bend that the airflow has to deal with in the event of a missing horn is what is causing the turbulence. As long as there are smooth transitions the MAF won't have any trouble.

Sorry to bring this back again...

Has anyone with a K&N Type 2 done this yet?

The Type 2 filter is much larger than the one in this thread.

I'm not much of a fabricator, but hopefully I can copy something one of you has done.

When you say "gut" the intake box, are you just taking everything that is removable out, or are you permanently altering anything? i.e. removing anything that cannot be put back in?

I see people getting **** for starting new threads instead of searching. Didn't realize I'd get more **** for reviving dead threads ;-)

Haha, yeah I know, I'm not giving you ****, it's just that this particular thread has been brought back from the dead a few times, haha. I actually like the idea of plexi-glass on the stock intake not only for looks but to see the filter to inspect it.
