DI-Y (direct injection)

if direct injection is a feature that is added to the new '07 rx8, will I be able to add it to my older rx8? Or is this going to be a different engine design?

and what are the chances of the aftermarket developing this as a product for extra hp and better gas mileage ( just for laughs ).

Direct injection if implimented as mazda has prototyped, will require a whole new engine as the DI placement will require at a minimum new rotor housings. The prototype engines I have read about had the DI right near the two spark plugs in a small chamber drilled into side of the housings. Any engine swap could be feasable.

The issue with DI in America is that it isn't used to its fullest potential economy wise b/c if you run an engine to lean, the NOx emissions rise and cats have a tough time cleaning that up. The new VW 2.0T DISI engine in the A3/Jetta etc.....doesn't run as lean as it does in Europe for this reason (Europe has different emissions standards as far as this goes). The aftermarket could fix this for us for sure.

Mazda has not announced a DI 2007 RX8. The only DI engine seen recently was the Rotary Prototype called the Senku at the Tokyo auto show. I would guess that the next RXxxx will have an all aluminum DI engine, but I don't know when that will be...likely 2009-2010 model year.
