Post downpipe, racepipe, midpipe, test pipe, crack pipe???????

Hi All,

Not trying to start any type of altercation like my last post. Just want to know some general difference between exhaust terms. This is what I know from my previous car. I removed the cat which gave me about 13hp on my altima, with only a slight increase in sound at Idle. The replacement product was called a downpipe, race pipe, or test pipe. With the replacement of this part, my car could still passed emissions with flying colors because there are 3 cats before the last cat, in the headers.

1. Is the Midpipe where the cat is located in the '8?'
2. How much more power is produced? (from what I read, anywhere from 5-10 hp.
3. How much sound will be produced? Now, I know that sound is relative, but in your best description.
4. Would this pass emission?
5. Anyone who has previously done this mod please give me your experience, and anyone who would not do this mod for whatever reason please tell me why.

ALSO, I usually get someone that say do a search, don't wast my time. Just to let the members know, I did a detailed search so don't waste my time and say do a search.

Thanks, Buck

The midpipe consists of the area/items of the cat & resonator. You can either get : 1) Hi-flow cat & resonator 2) Straight thru-pipe & resonator, 3) Straight thru pipe to the mufflers. Midpipe describes the area. Downpipe/racepipe (and in some cases midpipe) describes the method (removal of the cat). Without the cat (racepipe/downpipe/straight-thru) Racing Beat has gotten about 10 hp. With Hi-flow cat you will get more hp (but less than the 10 hp of the downpipe). CZ was saying about 3-5 whp. All of it will control sound. If you have a straight pipe it will be loud as hell. A hi-flow cat would pass emissions in most cases, but will not pass visual inspection (CARB Certification sticker) and by law you are not supposed to replace an emissions device that is in proper working order (wink, wink).

Buck,

Straight pipe it.....er...I mean install an off-road pipe **For offroad use only** Take advantage of the fact that we don't have any emissions testing down here. I might get daring enough and take my car down to VRS (Miami Muffler) and have an SS offroad pipe made up for my car.

Buck, The mid-pipe/resonator and High flow cat would be most beneficial using Canzoomers stage 2 upgrade. When final testing is done this should produce 30-40 WHP. I have ordered this combo and Maurice aka Canzoomer will ship it to me when he feels that it is ready. Since your close by. I will PM you when I have it installed.

This is an indirect comment. I noticed alot of you who have responded to my questions are from South Florida. Does anyone in this forum know about any Palm Beach (South Florida) Rx-8 driving clubs? Thanks again, Buck

Buck, you might want to contact Paradigm. He is from or very near West Palm Beach. You might also want to look at his above thread on visiting Pettit Racing.

Jim. PM me as well when you get that Stage 2 and pipe installed. I would love to feel what an additional 30-40whp feels like.

Buck, monzter. I cancelled my stage 2 order from Canzoomer. I hurt my back and I have sciatica in the left leg so I am unfortunately trying to sell the RX8 for a bigger car with and automatic transmission. Some of the local people such as Genom (above) and others already have modifications, perhaps they can help you.
