I just got a Green drop in, and the car seems to breathe easier. It's the first time that I have used a drop in, but after all the reading, and "Searching" in these forums, the Green seemed to be the best way to go...

I had a K&N filter in my previous Protégé and I really didn't notice the benefit, besides that it sounded better and revved a little smoother, most likely due to my other filter being dirty. I did see that on the link provided above there was a 10 degree difference in temperature which could explain the horsepower gains. In modern cars, such as the RX-8 you really will not get much more power out of an intake unless you upgrade the ECU, intake, and exhaust and even then the results aren’t that phenomenal. I once read that you really won't feel a difference until you get an additional 20HP.

Many people have the K&N and there is no way it adds 10 hp, and the only noticeable difference was on the high end, and it made quite a bit of noise. It also cause CEL & rough idle in some of the RX8'ers on this board.

since, I've decided to go with the racing beat exhaust, I'm probly gona go with their drop in filter.... Even do I'm buying a green filter for my wife's montero. I've read very good things about the green filter. I don't really have any info for the RB drop in but I've heard and read very good things about their other aftermarket parts..:D

I installed the green filter today.
I don't notice any change in exhaust note (with borla), and I don't notice any gains by my butt dyno.
On the other hand, if the green filter made my exhaust louder, I would be tempted to remove it from the car.

I've owned many cars over the years, and always been able to change my own air filters. But I'll be darned if the instructions in the Owner's Manual work. Unhooked the flamin clips, detached the electrical connector (that's another bugger to get off) and tried to "lift" off the air filter cover. Who is Mazda kidding? All right, those of you who have done it successfully, how do you REALLY get the danged cover off? Thanks.

I unscrewed the big rubber hose that the top of the air filter box connects to. I then unhooked the two clips, and was able to push the opening enough to slip the old filter out.
The green filter is much thinner, and was able to get in without too much trouble.
Earlier today, I was in the same situation as you, I didn't see how to get the damn thing out properly, and came here to search the boards. No luck, so I winged it.

I have the green filter. I like it, though I'm not sure I would say it gives a throatier tone -- I thought it made the engine sound cleaner -- you know, as if it's breathing easier. No really noticeable power gains, but it all adds up.

I have the MS drop in filter and it makes a noticeable difference in throttle response. I mean its not huge but you can tell... it also makes my exhaust sound better... it breathes easier. I really like it. I recommend it if you wanna drop the extra cash
