Howdy Everyone,
Figured you all might be interested in my dyno results I got yesterday at the dyno. I posted to my blog about it, with pictures and video and all at http://rezelse.blogspot.com/2011/10/dyno-at-kaizen.html
But as mentioned in my blog post... Can anyone come out and say why/how/what is up with RX-8's and dynoing low numbers? Clearly, there is no way with all of the modifications I've done (http://rezelse.blogspot.com/p/project-2-serenity.html) and with a brand new engine (yes, NOT re-manufactured) that I'm outputting only 177 WHP. In "Shoot Out" mode, I was getting numbers close to Eric Meyer (if you remember this post.. https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...89#post3114089) that he had gotten on a DynoJet, which "Shoot Out" mode apparently mimics a DynoJet.
And before someone tries to suggest removing the ABS fuse, I did that as well and both the before and after pulls were identical...so clearly pulling the ABS fuse (and shutting off the car and restarting it of course) does nothing.
I had asked someone on here who dynos A LOT of RX-8's and he said that all he does is throw it up on the dyno and does some pulls... But he didn't mention any specific settings either. Does anyone have any other suggestions or insight on this mystery so we can finally actually document it, and put it to rest? Thanks as always.

Engine takes too much of a dive from 6000-7000 and also 7500+
Shootout mode is a gimmick. Next time just use a Mustang or Dynojet, but if you really want to play make believe with the highest possible number then choose a Dynapack.

i was like "really? is that still stuck?" and i went to go unstick it and it already is. so someone did it at some point. at least if you mean that "how to dyno" thread where you put in giant red letters "unstick this bogus *** thread" or whatever.

I don't understand why you are surprised with the numbers?
Just about every power mod thread states .... bolt-on mods do SWEET **** ALL
Why can't people get it thru their heads?!?!?!?
Honestly.
If for example your car dyno's say 177hp stock (bone stock) on a dynojet ... you will need to go to extraordinary measures to get over 200 hp NA ... furthermore I would add that it wouldn't happen without a MM tune on the Cobb AP
Power mods that work on the RX8
Nitrous
Turbo Charging
Super Charging
<full stop>
edit:
I just read your mods .... nice list of fancy parts ... not much in the line of adding "power" ... a flywheel and exhaust?
Hardly parts I would expect to get huge gains out of ... say at least positive hp'ish gains

he is not surprised by the numbers, but rather trying to determine how they correspond to an overall assessment
the Dyno Dynamics is known for putting out the lowest numbers, but I'd basically call BS on the Shootout numbers. If you read what its about on the manufacturers website you can decide for yourself.
he also runs in a racing class that doesn't allow the crap you're listing, but you can still get some decent numbers NA with a good engine, the right parts, and a good tune
reading comprehension fail <---- just joking ....

We will have to agree to disagree ... OEM stock engines that put out "decent" numbers are far and few between and even with a good tune you are lucky to beat 200 hp
I'm not considering internal engine parts ... strictly bolt-ons.

Well, as mentioned, again... All I'm missing is my header (which I'm not sure if you know this, but my header is currently waiting for BHR to finalize the fitments on the final design. So we're not talking about a typical Racing Beat header or something here...we're talking long tube.) and then for MM to finish tuning. Right now I'm on version 5 of my tune.
Now, if you're telling me I'm apparently missing power mods for an N/A car, what are you suggesting I'm missing? Keep in mind, the engine has only 6,000 miles on it and is NOT a re-manufactured, but is brand spanking new.

I have driven the zelse's car, and it pulls real real hard. I'm fairly certain that the dyno wasnt configured right. Perhaps im about the state the obvious, but I want to assume that they clipped on to one of your coil's for the speed sensor, right? Did the dyno's tach reflect your tach?
Just throwing them out there, hopefully those were done when kaizen ran the car.

Marc,
Just letting you know I'm following the thread. I've discussed my opinion / thoughts on RX-8 Dynos with you previously. Lets just say that this fits in the exact same line of thought.
I'm declining to post it here for a variety of reasons. Primarily, no one with solid "how to operate a dyno" experience that also has a mindset that allows for investigation of oddities and apparently unconnected coincidences without a preconceived belief that already "solves" the questions through blind leaps that have nothing to support the conclusions.
If I find such a person, maybe I will be able to answer the questions that float through my head regarding this.

Thanks Mike, fair enough. Francesco, thanks as well. They did not (at least, not that I noticed, I could be wrong) place something on the ignition coil but the RPMs were correct. I think he plugged something into the ODBII port.

wcs,
There is 1 key difference between your dyno's and Zelse's. And mine, and Broda's, and the other 10-15 8s dynoed within the past 6 months in New England by people that don't know the RX-8.
Jeff dyno'ed yours.
Without getting into pointing fingers and theories, it's too much of a coincidence that all 20 or so RX-8s dynoed like ours have basically the same HP, regardless of mods that have been proven to make a power difference.
Every single last 8 dynoing within 10hp of each other when they shouldn't be is too damn coincidental for me to believe that any of them are accurate dyno readings.
And Zelse's mods aren't "off the shelf bolt ons".
His 8 is a performance test mule for more than one vendor prototyping their products, looking to find results.
Mazdamaniac is the only person on the forum that I'd care to discuss my theories and thoughts with around this subject, but it's an exercise in futility trying to have that detailed of a discussion with him in a public forum where other people can jump in.
I'm only going into it this much just to get you to back off from Zelse a bit. You are taking the wrong angle of perspective on this thread.
