Ehaust or CAI First
#2
Race track driving lessons first
Suspension upgrades next
Brake upgrades
Intake and exhaust are just for sound and appearance
This isn't what I did but I think this order makes more sense.

haha exhaust and I'm not even gonna try to make it any faster because the only thing worth makin it faster is to much for me to afford. If I was going for peer speed I wouldnt have got a rx-8 I would have got an evo or srt-4 and hopped that up Mainly I am just going for sound and looks...

If you set on a CAI or exhaust, then I would recommend an exhaust. I have a Rotary Perfomance mid pipe with Greddy SP2 catback. If I were to do this again, I would probably go with HKS Legamax instead of Greddy, but I can't justify buying another catback at the moment.

I did a cheap intake first... only cause it was cheap... check out the Apex Filter in Stock Box thread
But I would have liked to get an exhaust first. It sounds and looks so much better than stock.

Considering that both the an intake and exhaust are mainly purchased for their sound effects on the car, i would say get neither if your aiming on improving performance on your rx-8.
but if thats not your goal...then go with a new exhaust, seeing as that between an aftermarket intake and exhaust you will be hearing a more significant difference in sound with an exhaust rather than with an intake. power-wise, you'll be getting around the same mediocrely tiny results. so might as well go with the one that sounds better :D

I would say intake, because with just the exhaust your going to sound like everyone else who has just slapped an exhaust on their car, but with the intake it will be much more "engine" sound. If that makes sense.

22whp??????????i need to see a dyno for that
personally, and actually what i did do...i went with a resonated mid pipe...adds a little more noticeable power, and gave more of a performance sound (when cold it sounds buzzy tho)...i tried an intake with the k&n ver 1 and after 2 days took it off...im not going to go with a cat back because of the mid pipe...i dont want the car to sound toooo loud or ricey...its a daily car.
from reading on here, a stock intake with k&n filter and removing the baffles inside the box seems to be the best setup...the oem intake is a cai anyway. jus from personal experience with other cars intakes really only seem to be effective on cars with sucky/restrictive oem intakes, our intake isnt half bad from the start...why do you think the best/most recomended intake (racing beat) is like 90% identical to an oem box???
as far as exhaust goes, i personally only see it effective on either a turbo car, or somethin with a V8...esp on V8's plus it just complements the car's sound ie a Vette with a rumbling exhaust...im past the whole RSX with buzz can fadd now.

I haven't seen dyno charts of gains with the factory cat removed, but I have doubts it gives us 12 hp. Otherwise a lot more people here would be pulling them off.
Anyway, given a choice between the two, I vote for exhaust. The intake isn't going to boost power anymore than the exhaust will on a NA car, but you'll get the audible increase that you seek.

I would chalk it up to other factors such as climate, or perhaps installing new sparks or coils as having a far more likely cause for the hp gain than the exhaust and intake. We already know removing the exhaust completely only increases power by 5 hp. Intake gains are in the neighborhood of 3 hp too.

Midpipe. Remove your cat. and you'll see more performance gain over the intake or exhaust and it will definitely be louder. And it's cheaper.
Oh. And ignore DD. I do now and life is much better.
