Exhaust questions for new owner

Hey guys,

I have been reading through the stickies and tons of threads on this, but picking up my 8 this weekend and wondering if anyone has/knows anything about the agency power exhaust?

I see everyone saying the Greddy and BB are awesome, just wasn't sure if anyone had any other suggestions or if these 2 are the best choices. Also, do I need a tune for the 8 when doing this and is it alright to run the straight pipe or would I need to do something with the ecu when going that far on the exhaust? Thanks!

I have the Agency Power... sounds real nice with the cat, sounds real loud with the straight pipe. Everyone here has their favorites and will tell you to get X brand. Check out other RX8s local to you and see/hear what they are running, that way you can choose for yourself.

A tune isn't necessary... but you will receive a CEL (for not having a cat) and it will fail e-check (I just reinstalled my cat before e-check). The Cobb AccessPort can disable the bit so the CEL will stay off for just that sensor.

Wink

Thanks Jon- Yeah I just didn't see very many people/threads on agency power exhaust, so good to know.

So I need the Cobb access port if I want to run the straightpipe without a CEL? Will a CEL hurt the car or is it just a normal light saying blahblahblah your exhaust is different? I am use to having V8's.. so all this is new to me. Also, by loud do you mean droning or just loud (loud I can do hehe). My dad just sold a Pantera so not to worried about the sound.

The CEL will not hurt your car. It's just an annoying light.

Its loud and good when you step on the gas, but its loud and drowning when your cruising. Its not going to add any power to what you have, just sound. So my advice is to review 1. sound, 2. look, 3 price. and forget what anyone else tells you about "x" is best.

Wantedtwo: Is the loud and then droning comment for the Agency power or the Greddy you have? Also what different choices are there through Greddy or is there just one setup they make for the RX8.

Deadphoenix: Do you have a sound clip or pics you could send me/reference me too for the TurboXS.

Also as a general question any of the exhaust to stay away from fitment wise? Not really to concerned about price, just want a good sound, look, some performance out of it and awesome fit. Thanks.

Would the Cobb AP be good to get first then? That way I can clear out codes and tune as I go? Also, Jon why did you put the cat back on.. since you can just clear the CEL out... noise or just a hassle to clear out?

I needed to get the car e-checked.
I got used to always having the CEL on, so that wasn't an issue.
You can easily clear the CEL, but it comes back after a couple drive cycles (sometimes longer).
The loud noise was cool at first (and so was shooting flames), but got annoying after a couple months.
I had to turn the radio up louder and I had to shift up an extra gear than normal to dampen the sound (and to avoid "unwanted attention").
This is why I'm waiting to receive my MazSport dual-resonated midpipe instead of just reinstalling the AP single resonator midpipe.

A hi-flow cat should be a consideration too. With the straight pipe, you will run into some more things than just the loud sound & CEL (another downside to that is not knowing when a real issue comes up as the light is constantly on), especially possible gasoline smell in your cabin. The hp gain between the two is marginal at best and you won't get the possible droneing if you have the RP Supercat.

So a highflo cat with a good catback exhaust is probably the best medium then, sounds like. Where do I buy the RP stuff?

Also, just saw the single HKS hi-flo setup (wasn't sure if the single exit was just for turbo cars or not), sounded pretty nice. Any experience with that brand? Also is the Cobb AP only available for the Manual tranny?

No.
Read the Cobb AP thread to familiarize yourself with it.

I'm curious to hear the difference between AP's single and dual resonator mid-pipes.
Would be nice to have both pipes on the same car, same camera, same run... but that's a lot to ask for.

http://www.rx7.com/store/rx8/rx8exhaust.html

Look here to order the hi-flow cat.

In the past I have gotten several HKS products. Their products have been outstanding, literally unparalled by any other company in terms of quality, high end parts AND their service has been great. This is a big thing, because I have had some absolutely awful service from some other vendors (cough, cough Greddy). You pay a lot, you get alot. I have no problem with that.
