If you're talking about midpipes there are silenced\resonated ones that reduce some noise. There's an upcoming one from BHR, you can check how it sounds on youtube.
If you're talking about an exhaust then there's nothing to worry about catalyzers.
What are you looking for?

thinking along the line of hks or scorpion but had so much trouble with police due to loud exhausts in the past i just want something that improves performance and has a little bit of grunt to it but not to much.

you can get the racing beat exhaust. im running the race exhaust and a resonated midpipe. its loud and agressive and shoots flames. if u want something stocklike at low rpms....get the RB dual exhaust. i used to have it. it sounds slightly louder than stock at low rpms but a little louder at higher. but honestly the only exhaust piece thatll get u any extra power is getting a midpipe. u can run stock exhaust and a MP and itll be raspy at higher rpms. exhaust = little to no hp gain. just for sound like an intake

You may want to ask that question to the Mazda RX-8 Owners Club UK.
http://www.rx8ownersclub.co.uk/
They can let you know whats available in your country.

its a reasonably popular exhaust brand here in the uk. but not generally assosciated with performance cars, so i disregarded it instantly. on my old hatchback maybe, but top products only for my wankel
