ExoticSpeed metal cat resonated mid-pipe

Has anyone tried one of these?

I bought this pipe and the R1-T cat-back when it was first introduced about a year ago. It is pretty loud at WOT, and I dont think it would pass smog cause you still get a bit of a "gassy" smell from it. I dont know if anything has changed with the design since i bought it, but it sounds dead sexy! Its not as loud as a catless midpipe, but it is still pretty loud on a NA car. Spits flames on demand and make people move out your way when driving on the freeway lol. Currently, i dont have it install on my car because i got pulled over by CHP about 3 months ago for applified sound (exhuast too damn loud lol) and I have to smog it next month anyways. After that, its going back on All-in-all, i am happy with it, but I seriously doubt you can pass smog with it.

P.S. I should add, that it sounds pretty tame when your not at WOT. And i was always complimented how "clean" it sounds. No "rasp" at all.

HOw much it all of it cost you? im thinking about buying the same thing. should be 800$ right?

Thanks for the info Phalkhan, it's very useful! Have you tuned your car at all? How many miles on the system so far? Any signs of cat damage?

I'm having issues with it, it's second hand, and I can't seem to get the thing to not ride on my drive shaft cover.. Makes it sound redic' raspy at 4K and 7k+. Anyone know how to shift it towards passenger side a bit more?

Also getting a nasty rattle...

Stuck my head under the car to hear where it was coming from.. Seems to be the CAT area.. Does this mean the honeycomb is broken up or maybe there's just debris in it? No idea, first exhaust work I've done yet.

Possible that the o2 sensor makes this noise when failing? I used an old one..

I doubt the rattle is from the CAT..you just put it in

There was a rattle before also wasn't there?

Best to get under the car with heat resistant gloves and further inspect (obviously with the car running).
Move the pipes around and listen for the sound to disappear.
Inspect the heat shields and even grab them... basically listening for the rattling sound to change while moving a component.

It's coming from that area..

The rattle was there after my cat blew and before the honeycomb came out of the *** end. Disappeared after the comb came out.. It was just very loud, and the rasp was too much for me.. Inspected the CAT, and it was completely gone.\

I shook the catback mufflers and such, no sounds or anything. Nothing is stuck up there.

The gaskets are brand new from Mazda.. $62.. Made sure they were seated.

My heat shield (the aluminum foil thinger with foam inside it) is pretty messed up, but not metallic enough to rattle.

As I said, I think the raspy sound comes from the resonator hitting the driveshaft cover, but the rattle is coming from or just infront of the cat bulge on the pipe..

Jon, thanks for the tip!

I hardly had enough tools to swap the pipes, let alone heat resistant gloves!

I knew the o2 sensor question was dumb, but I don't have much expertise with car work. Trying to learn though!

No real signs of the cat being damaged. I've never gotten a CEL, car has the stock tuned, and I had about 25k on the cat before I got pulled over.


@MMedina, I dont really remember how much I paid for everything, but I do know is was closer to a grand (probably because of shipping). Whatever i paid, it was well worth it lol

@tubingchamp, I would recommend getting a small blow-torch to bend the metal hanger and adjust the fitment of the pipe. One other thing that I was thinking about, is to change the factory rubber hangers to polyurethane ones to reduce movement of the exhuast. I have issues with the catback rattling against the heat-shield underneath the trunk when connected to the stock cat-pipe. No problems when its connected the the Exoticspeed HFC.

And sorry its taken so long to answer, I dont read through the forums as much as I should lol

I have a used one and it smells really bad too. Not rotten egg smell, just extremely gassy like Phalkhan stated. It doesn't help that i have a leak where it meets the cat-back. lol
Fitment isn't so great paired with the stock exhaust.
With that said....

I'm debating on this:
1. Getting the sucker welded shut,
2. Trying an aftermarket cat-back,
or
3. Just putting the stock cat back in.........

Any suggestions everyone? haha

My experience with the single resonated pipe is that I loved the exhaust note with my RacingBeat dual exhaust. However the support arm broke off and took the wall of the pipe with it. Granted, I was beating the hell out of it at the track but still, it shouldn't brake off. It never impacted anything, it just tore off.



EDIT:
After looking at the images on their site, looks like they have added support to the newer model. So that should not be an issue.

same thing happened to my AP midpipe, but it didn't completely break off....had it rewelded and when I sold it, the new weld had a hairline crack in it.

Yeah I had the same problem in the same spot on my hi-flow cat. Was quoted 30 bucks to fix, and they did it in less than 5 mins.
