Has anyone run a straight exhaust pipe?

I'm wondering how loud it would be. If it would be simply obnoxious, I'd like to know that, too. I may just pull my exhaust off to hear it for myself, but I'm wondering if anyone else has already done it. Thanks! :D

As far as I know the only people that have done this is Racing Beat, and they said it was unbearable. They said they picked up about 4 hp with no mufflers. Even some people who are going with a mid-pipe (no cats) & an aftermarket exhaust say that it is really loud.

it is VERY loud..totally unstreetable and most race tracks like Road Atlanta here have a noise restriction in early morning hours that straight pipes on a rotary or midpipe (no-cat) will violate and they will not permit your car upon inspection...

I'm not talking about removing the cats, as I know that that makes a bigger difference than the mufflers! But, removing just the mufflers... Still way too loud?

Haven't heard of anyone just removing the mufflers. I'd be interested to hear what happens if you try it.

We ran a straight through mid pipe and it lasted about 4 days before the sound was unbearable and that was w/ a B&B muffler Huffman was actually black flagged off the track (AMP roadcourse in PHX) for it being to loud.

i did this on my old 13B first gen rx7. the noise is more than loud, it is like a carbide saw slicing repeatedly through your skull. truly amazing and not the least bit pleasant.

It was in the early 80's when I first worked corners for an IMSA race. Before mufflers were required for the RX3's and RX7's the sound was so loud and high pitched that it was painfull to have those cars go by. I would swear my ears were bleeding. We all wore ear plugs the next year. The year after that the rotory cars were required to have a muffler. The teams were trying to start a rumor that the muffler added 10 hp to the car. Of course it didn't. Two years after that all cars were required to use mufflers.
If you eliminated the muffler and the cats from the car, before you get the car out of the garage your neighbors, city & state police, FBI and the Office of Homeland Security will want to know what the hell is going on.

All I'm looking to pull off is the muffler canister itself. Not the mid pipe or cat.

I tried last night and got the muffler off all the hangers, but then couldn't separate it from the mid pipe. It isn't welded, but has an exhaust clamp and twist-lock connector. CAN I separate the muffler here? Do I have to take down the midpipe so I can put more torque on it to twist it free? Thanks.

You have to take it down to the midpipe. I'll be interested in how it sounds, so be sure to post a sound clip! :D

i tried it out and it is extremely loud. First time it was with the stock midpipe and no exhaust, the second time it was with the catless midpipe. There was not much of a difference with or without the cat, the only thing was with the cat on it made more of a hissing sound, but both were very very loud. I now have a catless midpipe and the racing beat exhaust and the tone is right where i want it. I did some modifications to the stock muffler before i bought the racing beat one. I carefully cut a port in the stock muffler and removed most of the insulation, and then i carefully welded it back in place, and amazingly it sounded pretty damn cool. But I removed it about a month later and replaced it with the nicer looking and highly polished Racing beat Exhaust.

I drove mine around the block that way. Got a call from a guy in Hawaii the next day wondering what all that racket on the west coast was.

Ok, after reading this thread... I haven't been able to figure it out (there are responses everywhere talking about repalcing the mid-pipe).... has anyone run a 'straight pipe' from the catback?

Does anyone know how to get JUST the MUFFLER off?

I want to take JUST the muffler itself off of the pipe. It looks like it has a twist lock and just an exhaust clamp. I took the muffler off all the hangers and loosened the clamp, but couldn't twist the muffler. The pipe would try to go with it. Do I have to take the pipe off from the cat and get the whole thing down on the ground in order to do it?

Basically, I'm looking for confirmation that the muffler will independently separate from the pipe leading into it. Anyone?... Anyone?... Bueller?...

Muffler-less......

You will have to take it all down to get that joint apart.

For a test, you could just break apart the big joint in the middle, the one with the two 'spring bolts', then wire the muffler end up so it doesn't drag, and go for a drive.

I had to do it as I put my Borla on, it wasn't TOO bad, louder and grumbly, but not really offensive. You still have the huge catalyst and the factory resonator in place.

I did the same thing when I took the cat off for some 'modifications'......now THAT'S loud!

heat it up with a torch...after you remove the clamp...it'll come off...you'll be deaf after you attempt this...when I was installing my exhaust i started the car up just for S&G's...it was so damn loud...it echoed throughout the neighborhood...and shot a killer flame...not cool since the gas tanks are right underneath where the midpipe exits...
