why?

anything is possible. You need a deep wallet, a lot of tools, mechanical ability, fabrication skills, and finally a deep wallet.

Of all the more useful things you could put your money towards ... this is what you come up with?

If I owned a BMW M3 I would get the manual and not the SMG transmission.

Much better things to waste your time and money on. Like trying to make Milk from Beans.

I'm hovering around the edges of understanding what you are talking about.

1) not sure what "Help!" is referring to

2) calling it a "sick idea" without knowing anything about what you are dealing with means it's a pipe dream

3) I don't "do thinking"

4) What's wrong with your current manual transmission that you would go through the cost for almost zero gain

5) anything is possible within the limits of your bank account

6) transmission swaps between S1 and S2 have been done plenty, with the S1 transmission also being the same as the S2000's and NC Miata's. I'm not aware of any direct swaps

7) plenty of race 8s have alternate transmissions

Second though on the subject:

Have you measured the length, height, width, bell housing size, length to shifter, size of the tranny housing, input shaft length, input shaft diameter, number of splines?

Do you understand how the SMG works and what else you'll need to make it work. Will it's computer work with the 8's ecu?

Do you want flappy paddles or just the bump stick.

how is it braced?, Will you be able to keep the PPF? Will you have to fab your own PPF.

How does it connect to the drive shaft? Will you need to use the bmw drive shaft and guibo, the 8's or a custom one?

I think you have a lot of research to do.

This has already been done and should be easy enough to replicate. Way easier than what the OP wants to do.

I can think of a bunch of other things that he'll have to figure out to make it work. I just don't want to blow his mind.

Biggest problem: Bell housing. Making a bell housing mate up to an relatively square engine that came from a tall skinny engine that sits at an angle. :scratche:

Heh, I had a similar crazy idea one time, except for putting in a dual-clutch transmission. I think the crazy-fast smooth shifts would suit the suit the power delivery of the RX-8's rotary.

After a little bit of research, I found that the Getrag 7DCI600 unit (as used in the E92 M3 and Ferrari California) would be a potential match as it can handle 9,000rpm, which most other DCTs do not.

No idea if it would fit or how the hell you would integrate and control it, though...

I can think of a lot of necessary mods...like radiator and oil coolers that I would do first

Thanks to all, I am sorry for my bad English, but I'm an Italian member, unfortunately :-(

I didn't understand it all of your answers, because many words are written in shorthand and my reading isn't so advanced :-)

I already have the transmission and differential of S2 (R3).

I think, a sequential automatic transmission would be convenient for me
But I do not want to take a long time for change, such as automatic tranny oem.

I'd like a flexible transmission, sport if you want to drive.
Handy if you do not want to change ....

and then the paddles on the steering wheel I've always liked :-))))
