Here is a question? The HKS intake when they say "racing suction kit" is that a type of intake like, "short ram" or "cold air" ,or is it the name of there intake like K&N is "typhoon"?

It's a shame HKS never brought over the Drop in filter...
BTW: I'm one of the guys Genom knows with the HKS exhaust. The build, quality, and sound are amazing. The *** dyno felt a difference, never had the chance to dyno it though.

Typhoon is K&N. THere have been problems in the past with K&N and the RX-8... engine heat causing hesitation and rough idle. A small (half-assed if you ask me) heat shield has seemed to fix the problem.
Rotary Extreme (RE) is the first and maybe best deal. It is just like HKS (or more like the other way around!), but with a K&N filter.
Auto Exe make a drop-in that offers 20% improvement over stock and Mazdaspeed makes a drop-in that is 10% better than stock. Auto Exe also has a short ram/CAI intake with a K&N filter and CF box... but very expensive.
There is nothing on their site, but I've seen pics and mentioned of an intake by FEED... big heat sheilding covering the battery and intake areas. The intake itself looks similar to the BLITZ.
BLITZ-type. There are several there other companies have put together and the official one by BLITZ (not listed on site).

Super Filter - Drop in replacement style: limited applications and performance gains are there, but conservative.
Super Mega Flow - Which is the core of the intakes that they offer. Typically these kits come with either steel or aluminum adapters and short pipes, HKS SMF filter and hardware.
Racing Suction Kits - Are the premier intake kits that offer aluminum piping that is typically longer and more intricate than the regular Super Mega Flow kits. Many of these kits now offer heat shields just like how the one for the RX8 does.
Hope that sheds some light.....

I read that the HKS round filter that is included with the Suction kit has a built-in velocity stack much like the stack that is in the stock airbox. Is this true? If so, is it possible that the stack, itself, is the problem with other units like the K&N filter which don't have it? I have the R.E. setup, which is cool, but I am thinking about switching the filter ***'y.

The HKS SMF filters do have a built-in velocity stack internall in the filter.
Since the HKS Racing Suction Kit for the RX-8 has an vehicle specific designed aluminum intake pipe and Airflow Meter mount, the large 100mm diameter inlet filter and velocity stack does not create any turbulence in the airflow which others may have. :D

While it's possible that the box filter helped to stabilize the air flow, I doubt that it is doing really doing much to help us here. Have you read the long post from rotarygod on the airbox, VFAD and Helmholtz resonance tuning? The engine gets all the air it needs right now through the stock airfilter and most importantly through the VFAD. Those tubes and openings are not very large. On the Mazdaspeed RX-8, Mazda didn't drop in a cone filter, they just put in a freer flowing box air filter and up'd the size of the VFAD.
The best choice here is to use the functions that rotarygod left in that thread and calculate the correct length and width. Modify the VFAD accordingly and get a aftermarket box filter.
For those willing to play around with things more... fabricate stuff... I'd try two designs I have in my head. The first is basically the same as HKS and RE... surround the box on three sides , plus a lid with a SS or aluminum exhaust deflection box. The RE box doesn't have sides from what I've seen and the K&N had no top and half-sides. There are some CAI boxes here, but yours will be better. No removable lid. Weld that bad boy closed all over. Prior to doing so, cover the lid and all sides with good sound proofing and heat resistance. The fliter itself should be the Auto Exe, MazdaSpeed or RB "drop-in" high-flow filter. Another option is to try a cone or mushroom filter instead...
Just my thoughts.

If you look at the details of the stock airbox there is a velocity stack and two screen assemblies built-in. My guess is that all three work in conjunction with one another to straighten airflow at low rpm's. Since most of the aftermarket kits omitted these parts I am wondering if that is the reason for the low rpm metering problems. If so, I will get myself the HKS filter ***'y and swap out the K&N. I agree that the HKS system looks real cool.

Yes, I read R.G.'s post on airboxes. He's the only one whose posts I follow regularly. The man knows his stuff!

The "sealed" aluminum box with "box type" filter CAI I am talking about is actually sold here for cars like the skyline, silvia, etc.
Two screen asseblies, huh? I wish I could get a look at intake and pull it apart...
RG's posts are always great. That man has earned his title...

i have been talking to George over at Boost Solutions, theyre a big participant in the Mitsu EVO and Subaru STi markets......
well anyhow i was chatting it up with him and after some nagging and some ore nagging lol he told me he can let the HKS Racing suction kits go for 515 to us and 480 if i can get a couple more ppl!
Anyone interested?! they retail for 645 Brand new on the market!

The HKS filters may have nice internal velocity stacks but the filter element absolutely sucks. No pun intended. Stay away from that foam filter crap unless you really don't care about your engine.

I have ran the HKS filters on many of my cars, as well as my 10sec supra for YEARS and have never had a problem
