HKS Suction...Not Impressed (read)
Well i installed the HKS suction late Saturday afternoon and to say the least i am not impressed. For 650 dollars this intake is a joke, even though i payed 485 new from RZ motoring, it still was a waiste of money.
Pros: Quality materials, pretty good instructions (except no detail on the sylinoid part) looks nice in the engine bay, noticable pull at high rpms.
Cons: Abnoxious angry mosqito sound at high rpms, so loud, carries terrible sound vibration throughout the cabin and whole car, laggy at times at lower rpms, slight drone on the highway.
Well fellas i am not impressed, i built some pretty modified cars in my time and starting with a stage 1 upgrade , which is intake and exhaust ,the HKS is a joke for this car. Some cars just sound cool under WOT with a intake or exhaust, the HKS suction just makes the RX-8 sound cheep and annoying. So annoying that my good friend/neibor and some other fellow neibors had to put there fingers in there ears under WOT. Shaking there head as i drove by.......
When i came home they told me that the car sounded like a "Angry mosqito" and my good friend offered to do a fly by while i stood on the side of the road. He ripped through the gears and it sounded abnoxious, loud and cheap. I had to agree.....
To be honest with you , i know intakes don't give you alot of performance to begin with, but the HKS suction barely showed any improvement over stock, except above 7500 rpms where the car pulled a little harder than stock. Takes off require a little more gas as the car wants to "almost " stall on you. As your ripping through the gears,at high rpms, the sound vibration just resonates through the cabin of the RX-8, not cool at all.......i checked , re-checked and checked again just to make sure everything was bolted and hooked correctly. It was....
Bottom line: If you want a 600 dollar noise maker HKS suction is for you,if your smart you will buy yourself a no -name intake for 200 bucks and save yourself hundreds from buying this intake and still get the same annoying sound for the price of entry. Or buy a highflow panel replacement filter such as a Airhog, K&N ,HKS, or Racing beat and call it the day.
For once in my life i rather have my car sound stock........

The majority of filters are loud, yes, but annoying no......My Jim wolf pop chargers on my TT Z made my car sound border line exotic, the Injen intake for my 2k2 Maxima made it sounded throaty, the HKS suction made the RX-8 sounds sillyand cheap. I know , its my opinion though......

Amen to that!
I wish more Rx-8 owners could here more cars with diffrent intakes, it would make them rethink of getting such intakes like the HKS suction. IMO the Rx-8 with the HKS suctions sounds almost as bad as a civic with a intake . Except the civic sounds like a angry bumble bee.......LOL!

Sorry to hear that you are dissatisfied about the intake. Not to sure what type of expectations you had going into your purchase. You claim that the sound of the intake ruins it for you. Heck, I could have told you it was loud, if you did research on the product first maybe you wouldn't have been so unhappy with it. I must have linked my video's on this forum about 100 times:

Name another intake on the market, other than RB's that won't sound similar to that of the racing suction. You also claim that there is hardly any performance with the intake installed. Now it may seem as if I have a biased opinion but I have driven a few rx8's with the racing beat intake and there is zero difference. I mean, can you really feel 2-3 hp? The intake is barely noticeable before 3500 rpm, it sounds pretty much stock, but if your going to be taking 7000-8000 rpm runs all the time, then you have some serious issues. The intake is not going to be for everyone, the noise doesn't bother me at all. i'm 24 years old and I love the sound! If your an older fella that doesn't appreciate having much noise coming from your engine than this kit isn't for you. Just don't go bashing the kit just because it was a lot louder than you expected. Everyone that has purchased the kit has never had any issues or problems with it. So before you start bashing on a good product do your research first.

Well if the majority of intakes for the Rx-8 sound like the HKS suction, i will pass...because the Angry mosqito sound is very abnoxious sounding, also i am 30. At your age i already had 3 sports cars too that were built beyond the stage one intake/exhaust , so i am pretty familiar with what i like and i don't like my vehicles to sound like. I did research and a video is much diffrent from being there live. Ever watched indy car racing on tv, yeah the sounds from the motors sound cool and semi loud, go to a real track and hear a indy car or a few indy car run WOT at the track, totally diffrent, its freaking insanely loud! But in a good way!
Your video gave me an idea, but i wouldn't know unless i was actually there.
Also i agree, you won't really beable to tell between 2-3 hp diffrence, as i stated, you feel a noticable pull after 7500 rpms, but the pull happens so fast you really can't enjoy it because your shifting into another gear.
Like everybody, opinions are like A-holes, everybody has them, if you don't like that i had negative feedback on the HKS , then fine, if you liked what i said, then fine too.

I'm with DailyDriver2k5 on this one. I've owned the REVi and the AEM for my 8 and removed them both because 1. the AEM was embarassingly loud at WOT. 2. The REVi, although sounded good, had no extra feeling of power to me. waste of $430 (with duct) for what it offered. I only realized this with the REVi when I put the stock airbox back on. There's no noticable difference. I just had TOO much pride at first to admit to myself I wasted money on both of these units.
Right now I have a k&n panel filter in and I feel that's the best set-up on this car for the money.

HKS has always made quality products.
Their suction intake is great quality, sound, and they definitely hit their target audience. It just doesn't seem to be you...
Sell it to someone else and call it a day.

Don't get me wrong, I love feedback! As I stated before the intake is loud, pretty much as loud as the AEM, umnitza, k&n etc. It's not for everyone, i don't work for hks so i am not defending "my" product. It's just the way you made the product sound, words like "joke obnoxious, cheap, etc", it's a great product and for you to bad mouth it like that is not very appreciated. Lets state what the product does, dyno proven power (typically 2-3 hp), no idle issues, complete kit with all necessary hardware, no CEL's...other than the noise it makes after 3500rpm there is no complaint/ problem with it. Don't just label a product bad just because of the noise, there was a lot of R&D done for this kit and it does what its supposed to do. I know your not totaly satisfied with the product then by all means, return it and purchase the RB intake, I have nothing against RB, infact I plan on implementing the ram air duct in conjunction with my racing suction. Just don't judge and bash products because of the way they sound.

Daily,
You should have read my reviews as well... Didn't you want a LOUDER car?? Indeed you were going to "gut" your cat out so you can get a "better" sound? What are you looking for??
This is very SUBJECTIVE and just because you feel this way, it doesn't mean it wrong for everybody.
Heck I am 39 so I can give you 2 guys a lesson or 2 about cars, performance and track setups but I'd rather not go there.
Needless to say, indeed the HKS is a bit loud, quality was not to my expectations, yet I like it a lot. During commute I barely hear it since I keep the car ~ 4K RPM but when I floor it then around 6K it's when it starts to come alive.
Let's face it.. no intake will give you much power, if any. Indeed some might lose like what happened with the early K&N intakes.
I do agree with you however that the car kind "bogs" when at WOT in a higher gear and mpg is not as good... but I didn't buy the intake for the MPG but for a bit more performance and deep sound, which in my case it has.
BTW, did you change the exhaust? If not... I am not surprised your friends called your car "a Mosquito Noise maker"
Change the exhaust and intake, if you want and you'll be happier
My 2 cents,
Carlos
