In a totally unashamedly attempt to bring this to your attention, I repost this link here, for those of you who don't regularly frequent the Australian regional sub-forum

Awesome Hymee. I am glad to see someone taking a chance by using a stand-alone EMS, rather than a slew of piggyback devices. Why did you decide on a Motec unit?

Good luck with the project.

I think you'd better read it again - he is going to use a piggyback!

The standard engine management system will be retained, and controlled via a TSI or similar piggy back (in the 1st instance), or reprogrammed if/when that can be achieved(in the 2nd instance).
The 1st prototype will be run on a fully equipped engine dyno and many tests run. This testing will be performed using a fully programmable MOTEC engine managment system. This is so we can have full and absolute control over the testing and data logging process. This will allow us to have the relevant data to be able to "get close" with the required re-mapping of the piggyback ECU/PCM.
It's just the engine dyno testing that will be run with the Motec. The in-car systems will use a piggyback.

Regards,
Gordon

Thanks mate.

Or tuned via re-programming the factory PCM, which is the ultimate deal and a longer term goal. This is not an easy task, so the piggybacks are definately helpful in the first instance.

The TSI unit allows us better control of the injectors than a MAF tricker style unit. With the TSI unit we don't mess with the MAF. We change the injector duty cycle directly.

Cheers,
Hymee.

D'oh!

I think Speed Force Racing's RX-8 turbo kit uses the TSI piggyback fuel controller.

We use it to control ignition as well. And we have already developed a plug&play harness for it. Plugs straight into the stock wiring loom, no wires cut or spliced.

Zoom,

Not as far as I know, but I am unsure of what further developments they have done with their unit. The one we own is over 6 months old.

Cheers,
Hymee.

i have been told that changes in timing split can open up some hp. i have not done any research beyond that but you might want to look into it. the ric shaw i believe already has this capability.

I can state categorically that there are gains to be found with split timing on a rotary. The Motec unit we will using during engine dynoing allows for that.

On the "Ric Shaw" unit. We own one of them, and have run it on my car extensively. We have also done a fair amount of work with it on the chassis dyno. The unit is actually made by TSI, and has a Ric Shaw decal on it. Mine also has a Hymee Enhanced decal on it. In the last 6 months, we have not checked to see if there is any firmware updates for the piggyback, or software updates to the tuning program, but I can tell you honestly in the version we have there is no adjustment in the S/W to adjust the split timing. Also, I am not sure how it could be achieved, as the piggy-back does not "splice" into the PCM's ignition pulse output. It does however, intercept and alter the fuel injection output pulses.

Our first in-car tuning (after the initial engine dyno R&D has been done with the Motec) will be done using the TSI unit. We have already made up and used a plug 'n play wiring loom to enable the unit to simply plug in without any wiring cuts/splices on the factory loom.

Cheers,
Hymee.

yeah, the closer you have the split, the more advanced you've got your trailing plugs (it's like advance on the usual advance for the lead plug). i s'pose it juts helps cleaning up combustion at high rpms (kinda like the 3rd super trailing plug in Mazda's race motors).
